When and Where: January 5, 2017 – Hooksett, N.H. (The Ice Den)
Score: Westfield State University 4, Southern New Hampshire University 1
Records: SNHU 11-4-0, WSU 7-5-0
Senior Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine) scored a shorthanded goal, but it would be all the offense Southern New Hampshire University could generate on Thursday, as the Penmen fell to Westfield State University in nonconference ice hockey action, 4-1.
Junior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) stopped 37 shots and freshman Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) added an assist, as SNHU was in action for the first time since December 11 and saw its five-game winning streak snapped.
The two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock through the first seven-plus minutes of the first period before the Owls struck first. Lenny Caglianone staked the visitors to the early lead on the powerplay when he hammered a one-timer from Jackson Leef glove-side high at 7:36.
The score remained unchanged through the duration of the first and through the midway point of the second before Bergeron buried the equalizer. Strawn dislodged the puck from the Westfield State defender at the top of the rightwing circle and skated into the neutral zone. Bergeron took a feed from Strawn just before the red line, broke in all alone and tucked a backhand just inside the far post to make it one-all with 7:29 left in the stanza.
That would be it for the Penmen, as the Owls found the back of the net three times in the final frame to put the game away. Josh Delezenne tallied the eventual game-winner at 3:13 before Caglianone potted his second of the evening just over three minutes later. Leef capped the game's scoring with 2:01 left in the contest with an empty netter to provide the final margin of scoring.
Notes:
- Westfield State outshot Southern New Hampshire by a 41-30 margin, including a 26-14 edge through two periods.
- Both sides were afforded seven powerplay opportunities. The Owls were 1-for-7 on the man advantage, while the Penmen were scoreless on their seven attempts.
- Southern New Hampshire is now 0-4 when it scores less than three goals in a game. The Penmen are also winless in the three games in which the opposition scores first.
