Senior Abigail Maker (Naples, Maine) netted the equalizer in the 73rd minute and the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the College of Saint Rose on Senior Day at Larkin Field to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship on Saturday.
The tie kept Southern New Hampshire and Saint Rose tied for second in the NE10 standings with 31 points, but the Penmen won the tiebreaker, as both teams lost to top-seeded Adelphi University during the regular season, but SNHU defeated fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce University, while Saint Rose lost to the Ravens. The Penmen will play host to seventh-seeded Bentley University in an NE10 Championship quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 31 (4 p.m.).
Trailing, 1-0, after halftime, Southern New Hampshire took control and knocked on the door multiple times looking to even the match. Senior Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) led a rush into the attacking zone midway through the 58th minute, but her shot from the right side of the box was ripped high.
The Penmen had another chance midway through the 66th minute when junior Danielle Humphreys (Hebron, Conn.) carried the ball from the box from left-to-right before turning in the middle and drilling a shot just wide of the left post.
Just two minutes later, sophomore Shae Roys (No. Billerica, Mass.) played a great ball in on the right for classmate Emily Roan (Bridgewater, Mass.), who chased it down, but Saint Rose goalkeeper Marika Laurendeau reached the ball a split second earlier and dove to cover it.
SNHU finally broke through with 17:20 on the clock in regulation as senior goalkeeper Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) alertly got the ball out quickly, hitting a booming punt up the right side of the pitch that was chased down by Maker, who took on a pair of Saint Rose defenders. Maker never stopped working, however, and when Laurendeau slid to cover the ball, but didn't, Maker was there to collect it. She hit an initial shot from in close on the right that was blocked by a Golden Knight back, before recovering the ball and lofting it over everyone in front and into the left side of the goalmouth to even the match, 1-1.
Senior Alena Woodarek (Springville, N.Y.) had a pair of chances in the final 10 minutes, including in the 83rd minute when she lined a shot from the top-right of the box over the crossbar. Laurendeau made a stop on Woodarek in the 85th minute to keep it tied.
In overtime, the Penmen looked like they would have a golden opportunity to win it in the 94th minute when Luis was taken down with the ball on her foot just outside the top of the box, but there was no call. In the 99th minute, freshman Reanna Romano (Derry, N.H.) smashed a free kick into the box that Luis was able to get up and put a head on, but the attempt went wide to the right.
Saint Rose nearly won it and stole the No. 2 seed late in the 104th minute when a Penmen defender and Salmon were caught in the middle of a ball played back to the 'keeper and Nina Predanic took advantage, looking to have an open net, but her quick drive from a tough angle on the right sailed high.
Roan then had a pair of chances to win it late in double OT – one in the 107th minute when she chased down a ball on the right side of the box and lofted a shot toward the far post that sailed wide, and another in the 109th minute where she rocketed a left-footed shot toward the right post, but Laurendeau dove to make the save. The ball, however, caromed off the post and looked to be back-spinning toward the back of the net, but seemingly defied the laws of physics as it dropped right onto the goal line and allowed Laurendeau to grab it and pull it out of danger.
Laurendeau came up big again with exactly one minute on the clock when Luis sent a cross from left-to-right for Maker, who teed-up a one-timer right down broadway, but Laurendeau was there to catch it.
Salmon made three saves, while Laurendeau stopped seven shots, including four in the two overtime periods.
Laurendeau thwarted SNHU's first chance of the match in the 15th minute when she made a diving stop of a Woodarek blast at the left post.
Saint Rose would break the ice late in the 38th minute when Sophia Constantine's corner service was blocked down, but she re-collected the ball and served it into the box, where Carlletia Savizon headed it into the far left side of the net.
