Fourth-ranked Long Island University-LIU Post produced a three-goal second half Saturday to defeat the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team, 4-0, at Larkin Field.

Southern New Hampshire owned the first dangerous attempt of the match in the sixth minute, as junior Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) chased down a long feed just as LIU Post goalkeeper Rachel Vellis had come out to get it. Holt was able to get her stick on the ball, but Vellis smothered the attempt.

The Pioneers then looked to go up, 1-0, in the 11th minute off a penalty corner, but the goal was waved off as a whistle had come just before the shot that put the ball in the back of the cage.

Holt again had a chance midway through the 16th minute off a scrum in front of the net, but Vellis made a kick save to keep it scoreless.

LIU Post found the board first in the latter half of the 19th minute when Taylor Brodsky intercepted a Southern New Hampshire pass and fed a long ball through traffic, with Emily Miller able to slip behind the defense and go 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper before sending a reverse-stick shot into the right side of the cage.

Holt generated two more chances, but she could not get a shot off when she was in alone with Vellis in the 25th minute, and then was stopped at the right post by Vellis in the 28th minute.

With just over four minutes remaining in the opening half, freshman Helene Servais (Brussels, Belgium) pushed a long pass ahead to sophomore Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, Netherlands), who maneuvered to her left to go around Vellis with only an open cage in front of her, but Vellis used her stick as she sprawled to the turf to knock the ball away.

LIU Post needed just 2:40 to double its lead in the second half, as Miller forced the ball through to Kate Melvin on the left with a scrum in front, and Melvin struck the ball into the right side of the cage.

The Pioneers nudged the lead to 3-0 just over nine minutes later when Sammy Bell fed a short centering pass from the left for Tarryn Morris, who batted the ball into the right side of the net.

LIU Post nearly scored again less than a minute later, but junior goalkeeper Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) made back-to-back saves on a pair of bids from Miller to keep it a three-goal contest.

Bell then scored one for herself late in the 59th minute, hammering home a centering feed from Melvin, who had carried the ball along the right end line before dishing to the middle, to make it 4-0.

Notes:
-Rennie made seven saves, while Vellis turned aside nine shots.
-Saturday's meeting between the two teams marked one year to the day the Penmen knocked off the top-ranked Pioneers, 2-1, in Brookville, N.Y.
-LIU Post outshot Southern New Hampshire, 14-12, including 10-5 in the second stanza, and also held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
- After earning victories in five of its first six games, and two triumphs in Northeast-10 Conference action, Southern New Hampshire is in the midst of a five-game slide.
