Freshman Griffin Connor (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) each registered their first career goals Friday, but a pair of second-period strikes lifted Saint Anselm College past Southern New Hampshire University, 4-2, in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at Sullivan Arena.
The Penmen fell behind early, as Bryan Green staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the first. After the hosts forced a turnover in the neutral zone, Green cruised in all alone and tucked a shot stick side to notch what proved to be the lone goal of the opening stanza.
Southern New Hampshire cracked the board with the equalizer just over five minutes into the second on a powerplay marker off the stick of Connor. Junior Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) won a man advantage draw back to senior Matt McLelland (Reading, Mass.) at the blue line, and he fed classmate Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) along the nearside boards. Moquin slid a quick pass to Connor in the slot, and he hammered home a one-timer five seconds into the powerplay and 5:02 into the frame to make it one all.
Saint Anselm responded less than 90 seconds later when Brian Cameron redirected a shot to the back of the net to push the Hawks back up by a goal with 13:30 left in the middle period. Matt Chisholm potted what proved to be the game winner with just 13 seconds to play before the intermission when he punched home a rebound that gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage through 40 minutes of play.
The score remained unchanged through the first 19:45 of the third before the two teams traded goals. Jon Pallotta tacked on an empty-netter to move Saint Anselm ahead, 4-1, before Goldstein provided the final margin of scoring with one second remaining.
Senior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) was saddled with the loss despite stopping 29 shots. His counterpart, Shane Joyce, earned the win between the pipes after recording 25 saves in his season debut.
