Sophomore Jared Goudreau (Manchester, N.H.) tallied a goal and two assists in the second period, and the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team scored five times in the second stanza to ease past Assumption College, 7-2, in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at the Ice Den on Friday.
Goudreau led the Penmen offense with three points, while his brother, Brandon Goudreau (Manchester, N.H.) scored twice in the victory. Seniors Timothy Baylis (West Haven, Conn.) and Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) each added a goal and a helper, and sophomore DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) joined freshman Steven Dumond (Seekonk, Mass.) with a pair of assists.
The Greyhounds opened the game's scoring less than five minutes into the first, as Brian Pickett hammered a shot through traffic from the point that snuck inside the far post to make it 1-0 at 4:50. Less than 10 minutes later, Brandon Goudreau connected on his first of the night to even the score at one apiece. Goldstein carried the puck along the leftwing into the Assumption zone and sent a feed in front for Dumond, who was camped out on the doorstep. After his bid was stopped, Goudreau crashed the net and punched home the rebound with 5:52 left in the frame.
The second stanza belonged entirely to the Penmen, as they outscored the Greyhounds, 5-0, to effectively put the game out of reach. Jared Goudreau opened the scoring just 1:03 into the period, and it set the tone for the remainder of the frame. The play was keyed by freshman Max Kent (Sandwich, Mass.), who grabbed a rebound in the rightwing corner of the SNHU defensive end and skated circles around three Assumption forecheckers before emerging from behind the net. He whipped a pass from the bottom of the faceoff circle to the far blue line onto the tape of Jared Goudreau, and he went in all alone on the Greyhound netminder before rifling a shot over his blocker to put the Penmen in front, 2-1.
Just over 10 minutes later, junior Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) doubled the advantage with his first of the year. After freshman Kyle Galloway (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and Valliere cycled the puck behind the Greyhound goal, Galloway stepped out to the leftwing faceoff circle and slid a pass to Efimov-Barakov in the slot. He quickly settled the puck before snapping a shot low to the short side that extended the lead to a pair with 9:54 left before intermission.
The two ensuing Southern New Hampshire goals occurred just 31 seconds apart, as the contingent of Valliere, Jared Goudreau and Baylis gave the hosts a comfortable four-goal cushion. The first marker occurred on the man advantage, with the puck working its way from Baylis along the rightwing board back up to Jared Goudreau at the point. Goudreau fed Valliere at the top of the right circle, and he carried the puck around the top of the zone to the left faceoff dot before unloading a wrister top corner short side at 15:18. 31 seconds later, Jared Goudreau moved the puck from deep in the Penmen zone to the blue line, where he sent a rink-wide pass to Baylis at the far blue line. Baylis breezed past a defender and drove down the leftwing before cutting in and tucking a shot five-hole. SNHU closed out the frame with another powerplay tally when senior Matt McLelland (Reading, Mass.) found sophomore Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) beneath the goal line in the attacking end. As Strawn went to move behind the goal, he whipped a behind-the-back pass to the tape of senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.), and the captain one-timed a shot to the back of the net with 26 seconds remaining.
The Greyhounds attempted to close the gap early in the third with a goal off the stick of Michael Wise 2:31 into the final period of play, however, Brandon Goudreau's second of the evening with 10:48 left provided the final margin of victory.
Senior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) anchored the Penmen defense with 30 saves in the triumph, including 16 in the second period. Brian Nazzaro was saddled with the loss for Assumption after stopping 18 shots and surrendering four goals in the opening 35:18. David Zulauf stepped in for the final 24:42 and steered aside a dozen shots and allowed three SNHU scores.
