Juniors Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) and Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) combined for more than half of the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team's points as it posted a 53-40 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Lorenzen scored a game-high 18 points (6-12 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 5-5 FT), grabbed nine rebounds and dished a pair of assists, while Camara posted 12 points (4-10 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds and three steals.
Meghan Cramb paced the Greyhounds with 10 points.
Assumption built an early 5-2 lead before nine straight points – with five coming from Lorenzen – put Southern New Hampshire on top, 11-5, with 4:29 remaining in the opening quarter. The Penmen would lead, 13-8, after one.
Southern New Hampshire would open the second-quarter scoring with a 6-2 spurt – bookended by 3-pointers from senior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) and Camara – to open its largest lead of the half at 19-10 just over two minutes in. Assumption would get as close as six, but a triple from sophomore Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) with just over a minute left sent the Penmen to the locker room with a 28-19 advantage.
After Assumption had nudged within eight over the first two minutes of the second half, Southern New Hampshire responded with an 11-4 run – triggered by a Camara trey – that spanned the remainder of the third quarter and opened the Penmen lead to 42-27.
SNHU picked up where it left off to start the fourth quarter, crafting a 7-1 run – with five points from Lorenzen – to run the lead to the largest of the contest at 49-28 less than four minutes into the final frame. Assumption answered with nine straight, including four from Abby McKanna, against the Penmen bench to slash the deficit to 49-37 with just over two minutes on the clock. Southern New Hampshire re-inserted its starters and scored four straight to take control of the game back and seal the victory.
Stinson tallied seven points (3-8 FG, 1-3 3-FG), five rebounds four steals and two assists. Freshman Sarah Deyo (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded seven points (2-6 FG, 1-5 3-FG, 2-6 FT) and nine boards, with senior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) chipping in four points (2-3 FG) and two rebounds.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire has now won five of its last six games.
-The 40 points scored by Assumption is the lowest for a Penmen opponent since Molloy netted 36 on Nov. 20, 2015.
-SNHU outshot Assumption, 37.3 percent (19-51) to 25 percent (14-56), while the Greyhounds returned the favor, 41.7 percent (5-12) to 28.6 percent (6-21), from beyond the arc.
-Southern New Hampshire was better at the line, 69.2 percent (9-13) to 46.7 percent (7-15).
-The Penmen won the paint (18-14) and turned in a better assist-to-turnover ratio (8/15-7/18), while the Greyhounds held a 44-36 advantage on the glass, including 18-8 on the offensive end, to post a 15-9 margin in second chance points.
