TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner for the East Region, while Greg Coache was feted as the Wilson/ITA East Region Coach of the Year on Monday when the ITA announced its national and regional awards at the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Aubron went 17-6, including 9-0 in conference play and 12-0 out of the No. 4 singles slot as he earned Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team honors. He was also a First Team selection at No. 2 singles, where he went 8-1 with fellow junior Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal). The economics and finance major sports a 3.87 grade-point average.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award, which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Coache was chosen as the region's top coach for the fourth time, including the second time on the men's side. Coache who earned his fourth NE10 Coach of the Year honor with the men and his eighth, overall, last month, guided the Penmen to a 16-7 record, including their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and second straight NE10 title, Regular-Season Championship, and undefeated conference slate after finishing 9-0. Southern New Hampshire, which won 10 straight to end the year before falling in the first round of NCAAs, currently owns a 19-match NE10 winning streak and has won 21 straight against conference foes, including the postseason.
