Wopnin?! Women's Soccer Trip to Bermuda: Blog Entry #1

The Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team traveled to the island of Bermuda for a week-long trip that will include site-seeing and soccer matches against local competition. Senior Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) will provide first-person accounts on the trip with daily blogs. This is her first entry.

"Wopnin?" is slang for "What's happening?" and is a standard friendly greeting on the island. To learn more about "Bermy slang," click HERE.

Monday, August 14

The early wakeup call today was one that everyone was excited about (surprisingly!). We departed from Southern New Hampshire University at 7 a.m. to arrive for our 11 a.m. flight to Bermuda! Everyone made it through security with ease, except Nerida Montrond ('19), who had to get her hair checked by TSA. Also, shout out to Samantha Sparda ('19) who is twenty-fun today! When we arrived at our gate, eager to depart, we were informed that the aircraft we were about to board was not certified to fly over the ocean (exciting!) and that we needed to wait for a new plane. We decided to use the extra time for some team bonding by playing "Heads Up," reminiscing over old pictures of Bridget O'Sullivan ('16), and organizing a push-up and wall-sit competition. Trisha Luis ('17) was the ultimate winner – congrats!

We arrived at our new home, Warwick Barracks, at 4:30 p.m. We settled in and headed off to practice at the Bermuda National Training Center to loosen up our legs before our first match Tuesday night, Practice went very well, but the climate change was something we had to get adjusted to.

After practice, we headed back to the Barracks for some dinner. Driving through the island and looking at the inviting blue water, we were eager to hit the beach before the end of the night. Fortunately, it is only a five-minute walk to the ocean from the Barracks. So, we headed down there after dinner. The water was the perfect temperature, not too cold and not too hot. When we turned the corner, you would have thought our team was getting new gear with the look of excitement on our faces to get in the water. After our swim, we headed back to the Barracks for a team meeting and to rest up for the following day!
