Senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) scored his second goal of the night midway through the third period to break a 3-3 tie and send the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to its fourth-straight win on Tuesday, a 4-3 triumph over Post University at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
Moquin led the Penmen offense with two goals, while sophomore Brett Strawn (Wareham, Mass.) handed out a pair of helpers in the victory. Sophomore Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) registered 30 saves to up his record to 3-0.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the contest when John Drummond tallied his first of the year with help from Tyler Hackett and Evan Lugo. Moquin responded with his first of the night and ninth of the season at 7:05 from Strawn and senior Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) Post responded just over four minutes later on Christopher Harris' second to stake the hosts to a 2-1 edge through one.
Southern New Hampshire drew even just under eight minutes into the second when sophomore DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) and freshman Kyle Galloway (Sugar Hill, Ga.) set up junior Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) for the lone goal of the frame.
After senior Griffin Rogers (Sanbornton, N.H.) provided the Penmen with their first lead of the night 5:24 into the final stanza, the Eagles reset the game on Noah Wild's first with 10:15 remaining in regulation. Less than a minute later, Moquin provided the difference with help from Strawn and senior Alec Cochran (Sanbornton, N.H.) to secure the victory.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Post by a 40-33 margin on Tuesday. The Penmen also held a slight edge in faceoff wins at 42-40, and held the Eagles scoreless on their two powerplay opportunities.
- SNHU picked up its first win of the season when trailing after the first period. Southern New Hampshire had been 0-2-1 in its three previous instances.
- Moquin's two goals pushes his season total to 10, which extends his career-high and eclipses his goal-scoring total from the two previous seasons combined. After notching nine goals and 28 points in 38 career games, Moquin has 10 goals and 13 points in 12 games this season. Four of his goals this season have either tied the game or won it for the Penmen.
- Rogers' goal was his first of the season, and first since January 16, 2017 when he scored the lone Southern New Hampshire goal in a 4-1 setback at Division I Arizona State University.
