Senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) tallied the game-tying goal with 1:34 remaining in regulation to erase a late deficit, and salvage a 2-2 tie for the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team with Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Ice Den on Friday.
Trailing 2-1 late in the third, senior Alec Cochran (Sanbornton, N.H.) carried the puck through the neutral zone and unloaded a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. Cochran's shot rang off the post, but Moquin crashed the crease and punched home the rebound to draw the Penmen even and force overtime.
Neither side was able to generate much offense in the extra session, however, sophomore Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) was called upon to stop a Purple Knights' breakaway attempt with 14 seconds remaining. A Southern New Hampshire turnover just inside the offensive zone blue line was quickly gathered in the neutral zone by Sam Finkelstein, who sprung Patrick Doherty in all alone on Gutting. Doherty tried to sneak a shot past Gutting's blocker, but he punched the attempt aside and the rebound was immediately cleared away from danger.
Saint Michael's grabbed the early advantage midway through the first period off a turnover deep in the Southern New Hampshire end. After a Penmen defender cycled a puck behind his own goal, Nic Hermary intercepted the puck and one-timed a feed to Sam D'Antuono in the slot. D'Antuono redirected the pass to the top left corner for his sixth of the year with 9:33 remaining.
The score remained unchanged through the remainder of the first before Southern New Hampshire answered less than a minute into the second. Junior Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) picked up the puck just outside the Purple Knights' blue line and carried the puck through the left faceoff circle. Just before getting past the near post, Efimov-Barakov slid a pass from beneath the goal line to sophomore DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) in the slot, and he deposited a shot just inside the far post to knot things up at one 45 seconds into the middle stanza.
Eric Salzillo reestablished the one-goal cushion for the visitors exactly six minutes after Goldstein's marker, as he unloaded a blast from the point through traffic that found its way to the back of the net.
Gutting registered 40 saves for the Penmen, including 17 in the third period and overtime. His counterpart, Tim Decker, turned aside 32 Southern New Hampshire shots.

- Southern New Hampshire was whistled for a pair of penalties and assessed four minutes of infractions, while the Purple Knights were tagged for three misdeeds and six minutes worth of penance. The Penmen were outshot by a 42-34 margin, including a 17-13 disadvantage in the third period and overtime.
- Gutting moved into the top spot nationally in save percentage after his 40-save effort. He currently has a .947 save percentage after stopping 177 of the 187 shots he's faced this season.
