Senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) tallied his 13th goal of the season Saturday, but a three-goal second period propelled Saint Michael's College past Southern New Hampshire University, 4-1, in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at the Ice Den.
After a scoreless first period, the Purple Knights went on a three-goal run midway through the second to effectively put the game out of reach. Andrew Olevitz opened the game's scoring on the powerplay 7:22 into the second when he took a feed from Jack Ouellette along the blue line, and rifled a shot through traffic that made its way to the back of the net. Less than five minutes later, Ouellette again inserted himself into the man advantage offense when he set up Sam D'Antuono for a one-timer in the slot to double the Saint Michael's advantage. Tyler Dorval capped the burst with 5:19 to go before the intermission after he cleaned a rebound attempt off a shot by Ethan Hendrickson to make it 3-0.
Southern New Hampshire would not go quietly, however, and trimmed its deficit back to a pair with 17 seconds remaining. After having what appeared to be their first goal waved off with 30 seconds to play, Moquin gathered a pass in the neutral zone and crossed into the Purple Knights' zone. As he reached the top of the right faceoff circle, Moquin unloaded a wrist shot past the glove of the Saint Michael's netminder to make it 3-1 through two periods of play.
It would be as close as the Penmen would come, as the visitors capped the game's scoring just under seven minutes into the third on D'Antuono's second of the afternoon to provide the final margin of scoring.
Senior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) was saddled with the loss after turning aside 22 of the 25 shots he faced in the opening 34:41 of action. Sophomore Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) provided 23:39 of relief, and registered 16 saves on 17 shots. Chris Johnson earned the win for Saint Michael's after a 35-save performance between the pipes.
Notes:
- The Penmen were outshot by a 42-36 margin Saturday, including a 15-8 disadvantage in the third period. SNHU was assessed three minor penalties and went 0-for-4 on the powerplay, while Saint Michael's was able to capitalize on two of its three man advantage chances.
- Southern New Hampshire entered Saturday's contest with a plus-12 goal differential in the second period and an 87.5-percent success rate on the penalty kill, however, the Penmen were outscored, 3-1, in the second stanza and two of the three markers came when Saint Michael's was on the powerplay.
- SNHU remains winless when it scores less than three goals on the season, and it has failed to do so in three of its last four NE10 outings.
