Junior Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped 54 shots as Southern New Hampshire edged seventh-ranked and previously unbeaten UMass Boston 2-1 Saturday in the first round of the Manchester Police Athletic League Stovepipe Hockey Tournament.  

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Gutting stopped 54 of 55 shots by the Beacons, including 20 in the final stanza.
• Senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) scored his third goal of the season for the Penmen.
• Freshman Charlie Davis (Milton, Mass.) tallied his fourth of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The teams battled through a scoreless first period.  The Penmen had one unsuccessful power play opportunity in the first.
• SNHU killed off an interference penalty midway through the second before Moquin's shot got past UMass Boston netminder Anthony D'Urso at 11:33.
• Freshman Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.) set up Moquin's goal with a pass into the attacking zone.   It was his third assist.
• The Penmen took a 2-0 lead at 14:44 when Charlie Davis was able to beat D'Urso from a slap shot off a rebound.  
• Assists on the second goal went to Senior Artem Efimov-Barakov (Khimki, Russia) and senior Joseph Berardi (Burlington, Mass.)
• The Beacons made it 2-1 at 12:35 of the third period when junior Nolan Redler blasted a shot from the left of Gutting off a pass from freshman Zack Bross.
• Gutting had a tremendous finish to the game, making three spectacular saves.  The Penmen were outshot 20-5 in the final period.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• The final shot total was 55- 21 in favor of UMass Boston.
• Each team had two power play opportunities and failed to score.

NOTES

• UMass Boston had been 7-0 to start the season and ranked seventh in USCHO's Division III poll this week.  They will play in Sunday's consolation game at 1:40 p.m. at The Ice Den.
• The teams played for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when SNHU fell 6-2 in UMass Boston's Codfish Bowl Tournament.  
• SNHU trails the all-time series with UMass Boston 12-9.
