Senior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) scored to make it a one-goal game in the third period and classmate Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) registered 35 saves, but the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team's season came to a close Saturday night with a 3-1 Northeast-10 Championship semifinal loss to Saint Anselm College at Sullivan Arena.
The fourth-seeded Penmen bow out in the semifinals against the Hawks for the second time in three seasons, while top-seeded Saint Anselm advances to the title game, where it will play host to second-seeded Saint Michael's College on Saturday, March 3.
After killing off the second Southern New Hampshire power play of the opening period, Saint Anselm cracked the scoreboard first, 13:49 into the period, as Bryan Green carried the puck down the left side of the ice, wheeled around at the bottom of the circle and fired a wrist shot that beat Slatky to make it 1-0.
The Penmen again had a pair of man-advantage chances in the second period and peppered Saint Anselm goaltender Colin Soucy, but could not find the back of the net. Slatky was equally as good, including a save on a breakaway opportunity that kept it a one-goal contest.
Saint Anselm doubled its lead just 14 seconds into the third period when Jon Pallotta took advantage of a Penmen turnover behind their own net, shoveling a back-hand pass in front, where Mike Ferraro collected it and put the puck past Slatky.
Southern New Hampshire made it on to the scoreboard with just under nine minutes to play in regulation when Moquin maneuvered through the left circle and around a pair of Saint Anselm defenders before unleashing a wrist shot that went top shelf to pull the Penmen with 2-1.
The Hawks responded two-and-a-half minutes later with an odd-man rush that resulted in Alec Andreucci pulling his defender toward the right post before spinning and dishing a pass to the slot for Pallotta, who capitalized on the 1-on-0 to make it 3-1.
Notes:
- Slatky's 35 saves on Saturday gives him 2,068 for his career and moves him past Scott Howat '86 for third all-time in program history in career saves.
- Both sides were unable to convert on any special teams opportunities, as they were each 0-for-4 on the power play.
- Southern New Hampshire closes the season winless in games in which it scores fewer than three goals. The Penmen were a perfect 12-0-0 when scoring three goals or more, but were winless in the 12 games they did not reach the three-goal plateau.
- SNHU was outshot by a 38-29 margin, including a 30-15 spread over the final 40 minutes of regulation.
- The win gives Saint Anselm a pair of crucial points in the Queen City Cup standings, as the battle for Manchester supremacy is now tied at 13-all.
