Despite the first career goals for SNHU's Kyle Conover, Gustaf Arfelt and Matt Monreal, SNHU couldn't hold a five-goal lead and lost to UMass Dartmouth 7-6 Thursday night at the Ice Den.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- SNHU opened the scoring at 3:23 of the first period when sophomore Kyle Conover (Cary, N.C.) intercepted a pass and converted it into his first career goal to make it 1-0.
- The Penmen extended the lead midway through the period when sophomore Gustaf Arfelt (Stockholm, Sweden) potted his first career goal off a feed from junior Max Kent (Sandwich, Mass.).
- The lead grew to 5-0 on goals by Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.), Andy Somerville (Medford, Mass.) and Matt Monreal (Wauwatosa, Wis.) in the second period.
- Fiorino tallied the only power goal of the night for SNHU just nine seconds into the period. Freshman George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) earned the assist.
- After UMass Dartmouth scored at 14:13 of the period to make it 5-1, sophomore Travis Quigley (North Babylon, N.Y.) answered with his fourth goal of the season.
- The Corsairs scored the game's final six goals. They tied the game at 17:04 on a shot by senior Cameron Mack and senior Steven Leonard had the game-winner at 3:09 of the extra period.
NOTES
- SNHU trails the all-time series with UMass Dartmouth 46-7-2.
- SNHU's power-play, which has been very productive this season, went 1-for-7. The Penmen had four unsuccessful man advantage situations in the third period and overtime.
- Somerville notched his second short-handed goal of the season in the second period. UMass Dartmouth also had one power-play goal and one short-handed goal in the wild contest.
- The 13 goals in the game were scored by 13 different players. UMass Dartmouth freshman Derek Britner (Salem, N.H.), who had prepped for college with the New Hampshire Avalanche, scored his first career goal in the third period.
- The game was originally scheduled for December 1 as the third-place game in the Manchester PAL Cup, SNHU's annual Thanksgiving weekend tournament.
- Wentworth, which beat UMass Dartmouth on the first day of the Manchester PAL Cup, secured the tournament title on Dec. 1 with a 6-1 win over Morrisville.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Penmen will look to snap a five-game losing streak when they host Becker College on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 7:50 p.m. at The Ice Den. It will be the final non-conference game of the season.
