Women's Basketball Topples Crosstown-Rival Saint Anselm with Thrilling, 88-83 Win

Senior Karlee Ziliak (Evansville, Ind.) netted a career-best 27 points and classmate Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) added 25, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to an 88-83 victory against crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College on Tuesday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire trailed, 11-2, nearly three-and-a-half minutes into the contest, when an 11-4 counter-run - led by five points from Ziliak, trimmed the deficit to 15-13 with 3:01 remaining.
  • Saint Anselm was in front, 68-63, less than a minute into the fourth quarter, when an 18-8 run catapulted the Penmen into the lead at 81-76 with 3:37 to go. Deyo, who nailed a pair of huge 3-pointers during the stretch, led the way with six, while Ziliak and Terry also added treys and each scored five.
  • With the score tied at 83-all with 41 seconds on the clock, Ziliak buried a long jumper to put the Penmen in front and then, following a turnover by the hosts, sank a pair of free throws to make it 87-83 with 17.1 left. The Hawks would miss twice on the other end and Terry made one of two at the line with 3.5 to go to all but seal it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Shannon Ryan led all players with a career-high 38 points (15-21 FG, 8-11 FT) and 17 rebounds for Saint Anselm.
  • The Penmen outshot the Hawks, 48.4 percent (31-64) to 40.8 percent (29-71), including 45 percent (9-20) to 22.7 percent (5-22) from beyond the arc.
  • Saint Anselm was plus-3 from the line and shot it better, 83.3 percent (20-24) to 81 percent (17-21).
  • The Penmen collected more points off turnovers (16-3) and on the fast break (17-6), in addition to receiving more scoring from their bench (37-10), while the Hawks won the glass (44-33), including on the offensive end (17-8), captured the paint (48-36), gathered more second chance points (23-3) and recorded a better assist-to-turnover ratio (19/9-16/8).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire wins for the second time in three games, while Saint Anselm loses its second straight following a seven-game winning streak.
  • SNHU snaps an eight-game winning streak against Saint Anselm, as it wins for the second time in the last 13 meetings. Saint Anselm, which leads the all-time series, 51-20, loses to Southern New Hampshire for the first time since a 74-65 home defeat Nov. 18, 2015.
  • The teams split the regular-season series, as Saint Anselm won, 84-83, in the final seconds at SNHU back on Nov. 26.
  • Ziliak, who entered Saturday with a career high of 19 points, scored a career-best 24 against Assumption College on Saturday, before adding the 27 against the Hawks.
  • Dean scores 20 or more points for the third time this season and in her career.
  • The win gives Southern New Hampshire another point in the Queen City Cup standings, as it now leads, 12-9, in the battle for Manchester supremacy.

  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, Feb. 15 (1:30 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University at the Stan Spirou Field House. The game will air on WGIR 610-AM.
