MANSFIELD, Mass. - Senior Matt Conti (Walpole, Mass.) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's golf team was chosen as the NE10 Player of the week, while freshman Jack Pepin (Plaistow, N.H.) took home NE10 Rookie of the Week honors, for the period ending Sept. 21, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
SNHU captured the Penmen Fall Invitational, which it hosted Monday and Tuesday at Derryfield Country Club. The Penmen won their second straight tournament, beating their next closest opponent by a whopping 28 strokes with a score of even-par 840.
Conti led wire-to-wire to win the Penmen Fall Invite, as he fired a 67 and then a 68 in the first two rounds Monday, before closing with a 71 that gave him a 54-hole total of 4-under 206. Conti, who was the only golfer under part for the tournament, won by four strokes. He had a tourney-high 10 birdies and led the field in par 4 scoring (-5). Conti earned the award last week, as well, after gathering co-medalist honors at the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational.
Pepin submitted a 1-over 211 to tie for third. He turned in scores of 70 and 73 in Monday's first two rounds and then posted the lowest round of the day Tuesday with a 68 that saw him climb toward the top of the leaderboard. Pepin was part of a group that collected a tournament-best 10 birdies and he also finished second in par 4 scoring (-3).
Conti, Pepin and the Penmen return to action Monday, Oct. 4 for the NE10 Championship, which they will host at Concord Country Club.
