Junior Noah Kamba (Lynn, Mass.) scored a team-high nine points, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team opened its season with an 82-41 exhibition loss to Division I St. John's University on Saturday evening at Carnesecca Arena.

  • Kamba – 9 points (3-7 FG, 3-5 3-FG), 4 rebounds, 2 assists
  • Junior Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) – 8 points (2-11 FG, 2-10 3-FG, 2-2 FT), 4 rebounds
  • Sophomore Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) – 7 points (3-14 FG, 1-4 3-FG), 3 rebounds
KEY MOMENTS
  • Kamba and graduate student Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) knocked down 3-pointers in the opening four minutes and the Penmen built an 8-6 lead.
  • The score was tied, 10-10, with 12:24 on the clock when a 13-3 burst from St. John's gave it a 23-13 with 8:30 to go in the opening half. A Kamba triple at the buzzer would trim SNHU's halftime deficit to 35-26.
  • The Red Storm scored the first nine points of the second half to run their lead to an even 20 at 46-26 just 4:26 in. SJU would end the game on a 31-6 run over the final 10:17.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sophomores Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.; 2-6 FG, 1-2 FT) and Derrick Grant (Plainfield, N.J.; 2-2 FG, 1-2 FT) each scored five points.
  • Junior Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa.) posted two points (1-2 FG) and five boards.
  • Sophomore Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) tallied two points (1-4 FG) and three rebounds.
  • St. John's outshot SNHU, 45.6 percent (31-68) to 27.3 percent (15-55), including 32 percent (8-25) to 24.1 percent (7-29) from beyond the arc. The Red Storm were also plus-8 at the stripe and shot it better, 66.7 percent (12-18) to 57.1 percent (4-7).
  • SJU won the glass (50-34), captured the paint (38-8), featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (20/7-6/17), scored more points off turnovers (19-2), on the fast break (13-4) and tallied more second chance points (19-2).
NOTES
  • St. John's finished 17-15 last season, including 8-11 in the BIG EAST, and lost to Villanova University, 66-65, in the BIG EAST quarterfinals.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Nov. 1 (7 p.m.) when they play yet another Division I exhibition against ACC power, Syracuse University at the JMA Wireless Dome. The game will air on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).
  • SNHU officially tips off the season Saturday, Nov. 12 (3 p.m.) at the University of Bridgeport.
  • The first home game for the Penmen is Tuesday, Nov. 22 (7:30 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University.
