Indoor Track & Field Wins Tri-Meet at Plymouth State

Gravell notches three wins for Penmen Saturday

When and Where: December 10, 2022- Winter Classic, Plymouth, N.H. (PSU)
Results:  1st of 3 (116 points)

Junior Ava Gravell (Windham, N.H.) won two individual events and helped lead the 4x400 relay team to a win as SNHU Indoor Track & Field won the Winter Classic, a tri-meet with Plymouth State and Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Gravell opened her season with an 8.03 to win the 60m dash.   She also finished first in the long jump with a 5.21m.
  • The Penmen finished 1-2 in the 60m hurdles with junior Emma Hallet (Billerica, Mass.) edging out sophomore Tori Allen (Litchfield, N.H.) for the win.
  • Allen and Gravell teamed with freshman Jada Edgren (Belmont, N.H.) and freshman Maggie McInerney (Acton, Mass.) to win the 4x400 in 4:27.55.
  • Senior Madison McMahon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was tops in the high jump with a 1.56m, matching teammate junior Theresa Irving (Penacook, N.H.). 
  • Freshman Amelia Edmonds (Strafford, N.H.) ran the 60m and was the top finisher in the pole vault with an effort just over eight feet.
  • The Penmen picked up a second-place finish in the triple jump when senior Meredith DeNegris (Wallingford, Conn.) hit 10.17m, just off her personal best.
  • Graduate student Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.) opened the indoor season with a win in the shot put (11.26m), with graduate student Tatyanna Beckford (Orange, N.J.) finishing second (10.77m) and freshman Brooke Bibbo (Burlington, Mass.) third at 10.47m.
  • Alula also won the weight throw (14.06m) with Beckford in second place with a personal best throw of 11.87m.
NOTES
  • This was the first opportunity for several newcomers to the track and field program to compete.  In addition to Edgren and Edmonds, first-year  runner Colleen McGurl (Billerica, Mass.) ran the 60m.
  • Gravell just missed a PR at 60m by .01.  She ran an 8.02 at the Northeast-10 Indoor Championships last February.
  • Freshman Anne Wiersma (Velhoven, the Netherlands), who also plays for the SNHU Field Hockey team, ran a mile in 6:08.01 to finish third in the event.
  • SNHU's distance runners had this meet off.

WHAT'S NEXT
  •  The Penmen return to action on Saturday Jan. 7 when they are scheduled to head to the University of Southern Maine.
