MANSFIELD, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball head coach
Jack Perri was voted as the NE10 Coach of the Year, while junior
Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.), and sophomores
Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) and
Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) earned All-Conference honors, the league office announced Monday.
Perri, in his fifth year, receives his first NE10 Coach of the Year accolade after guiding the Penmen to a 20-7 record, including 16-4 in the NE10. SNHU, which is receiving votes in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Coaches Poll, claimed its first NE10 Regular-Season Championship since 2016-17, earning the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye for the NE10 Championship. It is Perri's first 20-win season since taking the helm in Manchester, as well as the program's first since 2016-17. Perri has the Penmen rolling, as they have won 17 of their last 21, 16 of their last 17 and 10-in-a-row. Following a 58-51 quarterfinal win over Franklin Pierce on Sunday, SNHU is in the semifinals for the ninth time and first since 2017.
This marks the first time three Penmen have earned all-conference honors in a single season since Scott Smith, Orlando Ranson and Shawon Moncrief were All-NECC in 1997.
Becht, who was chosen for the NE10 All-Conference First Team, has played in all 27 games this season, starting 26 of them. He is averaging 15.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest, while knocking down 46.7 percent (126-270) of his shots from the field, including 47.5 percent (84-177) from downtown, and 90.9 percent (90-99) at the line. His 84 3-pointers made are currently tied for seventh in the program's single-season record book. Becht, the Dec. 5 and Feb. 6 NE10 Player of the Week, leads the league in 3-pointers made and free throw percentage, while ranking second in 3-point field goal percentage, fourth in free throws made and fifth in scoring. Becht has scored in double figures 23 times, including eight straight games twice. His best performance came in an 81-76 win at Bentley University on Feb. 1 when he dropped 34 points. Becht was a Third Team selection a year ago.
Okwuosa, one of two Penmen to start all 27 games, earned a spot on the NE10 All-Conference Second Team. He is recording 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, while shooting 42.2 percent (133-315) from the field, including 39.6 percent (40-101) from beyond the arc, and 80 percent (40-50) from the stripe. Okwuosa ranks 13th in the league in rebounding, 14th in 3-point field goal percentage and 20th in field goals made, and just outside the top 20 in assists and scoring. He put together a season-best eight-game, double-digit scoring streak from Nov. 13-Dec. 6. He netted a career-high 23 points in a 75-67 victory over Franklin Pierce on Feb. 7.
Guillory is an NE10 All-Conference Third Teamer after starting 26 of the 27 games he has played in to this point. Guillory is posting 13.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per contest, while shooting 47.4 percent (137-289) from the floor and 69.4 percent (75-108) at the line. He is currently sitting 11th in the NE10 in free throws made, 13th in rebounding, 17th in field goals made, 18th in free throw percentage, 19th in field goal percentage and 20th in scoring, as well as just outside the top 20 in steals. He is currently in the midst of a nine-game, double-digit scoring streak that has seen him average 17.7 ppg during the stretch. He dropped a career-best 30 points in a 76-61 win against Saint Michael's on Feb. 21.
The top-seeded Penmen will play host to an NE10 Championship semifinal game against the fourth-seeded University of New Haven on Wednesday, March 1 (7 p.m.) at the Stan Spirou Field House. The game will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
