Softball Drops Doubleheader at Bridgeport

Penmen fall 4-0 and 10-1 Thursday in non-conference action

(Bridgeport, Conn.) - Junior Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) pitched a complete game in the opener, but SNHU dropped Thursday's doubleheader at the University of Bridgeport.

GAME 1: 
 
  • Bridgeport pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a double by Maya Jones.
  • The Penmen left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, and two more runners were stranded in the top of the sixth.
  • Five different players had one hit each for SNHU.  Junior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.), freshman Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.), sophomore Jordyn Resetar (Hanover, Pa.), senior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.), and junior Ari Ferrier (Middleborough, Mass.) had singles.
  • The Purple Knights took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Jones.
  • Freshman Vise Zarate tossed the complete-game shutout for Bridgeport.
  • McKechnie made her first start of the season in the circle, allowing four runs (two earned).  She walked three and struck out five.
 
GAME 2: 
 
  • Bridgeport scored five times in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Junior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) put the Penmen on the board with an RBI single in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
  • Sophomore Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle, and sophomore Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) took over in the bottom of the second inning. 
  • Hammond got out of the inning when Dickinson snagged a liner, leading to an unassisted double play.
  • Purple Knight pinch-hitter Angela Oros picked up her first hit of the season, a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning.
  • The Penmen were held to three hits, singles by Dickinson, junior Alyssa DiMauro (Chester, N.H.), and freshman Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.).
 
NOTES
  • The Penmen are 9-24 all-time against Bridgeport.
  • The Purple Knights are playing their first season as a member of the CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference). This was their home opener, and Bridgeport has now won four straight games. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will play a doubleheader at Dominican College on Friday in Orangeburg, N.Y. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m.
  • The first home game for the Penmen is slated against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, April 1.
