Men's Golf Captures Granite State Opener; Surprenant Ties for First

Surprenant shoots 11-under in first collegiate tournament

Score: Southern New Hampshire University – 863 (1st/14)

Freshman Andrew Surprenant (Boscawen, N.H.) fired a 3-under 69 in the final round to tie for individual medalist honors and help lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's golf team to a win at its Granite State Opener on Tuesday at Beaver Meadow Golf Course in Concord, N.H.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS
  • Surprenant, who entered the day at 8-under and in a tie with Merrimack College's Nerraj Shetty for first place, submitted his third sub-70 round of his first collegiate tournament to match Shetty's 69 and earn a first-place tie with an 11-under 205.
  • Freshman Sam Maurice (Auburn, N.H.), who went 71-69 in the first two rounds Monday, carded an even-par 72 to tie for fourth with a 4-under 212.
  • Senior Jack Pepin (Plaistow, N.H.) turned in his best round of the tournament with a 2-over 74 that tied him for 29th with a 225.
  • Junior Sean Dully (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) recorded his second best round of the event with a 3-over 75 and totaled up a 230.
  • Junior Evan Rollins (Laconia, N.H.) had his 77 dropped from the team score and finished even with Pepin at 225.
NOTES
  • Freshman Stephen Ramos (Danville, N.H.), playing as an individual, tied for 14th with a 2-over 218 after submitting his second straight even-par round.
  • Graduate student Alex Korkuc (So. Setauket, N.Y.), also playing as an individual, finished at 10 over after his second 76.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Cormier (Walpole, N.H.), another Penmen individual, fired his best round with an even-par 72 and closed the tourney at 227.
  • Sophomore Drew Cameron (Londonderry, N.H.), the final SNHU individual, shot 240 after an 83.
  • SNHU's 863 wound up three strokes ahead of Merrimack College's A team (860).
  • The Granite State Opener was comprised of 75 golfers from 13 different institutions.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen host another tournament next week when the Penmen Fall Invitational takes place Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23 and 24 at Montcalm Golf Club in Enfield.
