Graduate student Dani Gonzalez (Llanera, Spain) scored in the 52nd minute and classmate
Alvaro Garcia (Castelldefels, Spain) made a huge save in the final seconds, as the 14th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team took down No. 22 Franklin Pierce University, 1-0, Saturday at Sodexo Field, snapping the Ravens' 66-match home unbeaten streak.
KEY MOMENT
- SNHU broke the scoreless tie 6:16 into the second half when grad student Chus Ortega (Santander, Spain) took a quick feed from senior Alejo Caceres (Córdoba, Argentina) off a corner kick, dribbled toward the endline and ripped a cross to the middle of the box where Gonzalez flicked a quick header past the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper and inside the far left post.
- Garcia came up huge with 40 seconds left, making a do-or-die save off a shot from the edge of the 6-yard box.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 14th in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, has now won seven of its last eight, including four-in-a-row.
- Franklin Pierce, ranked 22nd in the poll, has its 66-match home unbeaten streak (58-0-8) halted, as it loses at Sodexo for the first time since Oct. 23, 2018.
- SNHU had also ended FPU's 64-match unbeaten streak with a 4-2 home win Oct. 8 of last season, handing the Ravens their first defeat since Oct. 23, 2021.
- The victory clinches at least one home match in the NE10 Championship for the Penmen, who can drop no lower than the No. 3 seed. A win or tie in SNHU's final regular-season NE10 contest will clinch at least the No. 2 seed, while a win, coupled with a Bentley University loss or tie, would give the Penmen the top seed and their second straight NE10 regular season title.
- The Ravens outshot the Penmen, 13-6, but SNHU had more shots on target (4-2).
- Southern New Hampshire leads the all-time series with Franklin Pierce, 32-31-7, and is now unbeaten over its last three (2-0-1) against the Ravens, who last won in the series Oct. 28, 2023 with a 1-0 victory that wound up capping a six-match winning streak versus the Penmen. This also snapped the Ravens' eight-match unbeaten streak at home (7-0-1), where SNHU comes away victorious for the first time since Sept. 17, 2014 (3-0).
- Gonzalez' third goal of the season – all coming in the last three matches – is the sixth of his career.
- Garcia stopped both shots he faced for his sixth clean sheet of the year. Garcia and the Penmen record their second straight shutout and extend their scoreless streak to 226:30.
- SNHU is 156-40-29 (.758) over its last 225 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
