Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain) built a two-goal lead for the third-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team in an eventual 2-1 triumph over Adelphi University on Saturday evening at Ouellette Stadium.
KEY MOMENT
- With the Penmen holding on to a 1-0 edge midway through the 53rd minute, grad student Dani Gonzalez (Llanera, Spain) swiped the ball from an Adelphi defender who could not corral it and slipped a quick pass into the right side of the box for Fuentes. Fuentes ran on to it, dribbled to the outside corner of the 6 and sent a low shot back across the diving goalkeeper and inside the far post.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked third in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, is unbeaten through its first nine matches for the first time since 2018 when it started the season 9-0-0.
- Southern New Hampshire leads the all-time series with Adelphi, 11-7-0, and has now won six straight. SNHU had not allowed a goal to the Panthers during the five-match winning streak and saw their scoreless streak halted at 598:50 on Adelphi's 81st-minute goal. The Penmen have also captured four straight at home in the series and saw that scoreless streak ended at 366:13
- Grad student Alvaro Garcia (Castelldefels, Spain) stopped a season-high seven of the eight shots he faced.
- Castro's second strike of the season is the fifth of his career.
- Fuentes' fifth goal of the season – all coming in the last five matches – is the 12th of his two-year Penmen career. He is second in the league in goals, points and assists.
- SNHU is 152-39-29 (.757) over its last 220 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
- The Penmen improve to 104-15-18 (.825) over their last 137 contests at home, including 42-8-11 (.779) at Ouellette Stadium.
