Graduate students Dani Gonzalez (Llanera, Spain) and Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain) each notched a pair of goals as the sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team raced past Assumption University, 8-1, Wednesday night at Ouellette Stadium.
KEY MOMENT
- Fuentes scored his second goal of the contest in the 40th minute, setting off a run of three straight goals over the final 5:16 of the opening half that ballooned the lead from 2-0 to 5-0.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, has now won nine of its last 10, including six-in-a-row.
- SNHU earns the No. 2 seed for the NE10 Championship and will host seventh-seeded American International College on Saturday, Nov. 8 (4 p.m.).
- The Penmen score eight goals for the first time since Oct. 18, 2014 in an identical 8-1 home victory against Assumption.
- SNHU also took a 5-0 lead into halftime for the second time this season, after doing so in a 6-0 victory over Pace University on Oct. 11. It was the first time the program had accomplished the feat since that 8-1 win over Assumption on Oct. 18, 2014.
- The Penmen outshot the Greyhounds, 37-6, including 19-2 in shots on target. The 37 shots are the most since Oct. 10, 2015 when SNHU outshot the University of New Haven, 37-6, in a 2-1 road victory.
- Senior AJ Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) made one save in his first start of the season.
- The Penmen lead the all-time series with the Greyhounds, 23-4-4, and are unbeaten in 15 of the last 18 meetings (14-3-1), though Assumption had entered the matching winning three of the last five. Over the last two meetings, The Penmen are outscoring the Greyhounds, 14-1. SNHU improves to 13-1-2 at home against Assumption.
- Fuentes now has nine goals on the year and 16 in his two-year Penmen career. He finishes the regular season as the NE10 leader in points (23), while tying for the league lead in goals and game-winning goals (5), and tying for third in assists (5).
Gonzalez and sophomore Gabriel Castro (León, Spain) each notched their fifth goal of the season and eighth of their career.
- Freshman Felipe di Paola (Mar del Plata, Argentina) scores the fourth goal of his rookie season.
- Senior Pateh Laye (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Zak Mishcon (London, U.K.) both scored the first goal of their careers.
- Freshman Noah Lakhdari (Concord, N.H.) collected his first collegiate point with an assist.
- SNHU is 158-40-29 (.760) over its last 227 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
- The Penmen improve to 106-15-18 (.827) over their last 139 contests at home, including 44-8-11 (.786) at Ouellette Stadium. SNHU is now 15-1-3 (.868) at home over its last two seasons and is unbeaten at Ouellette in 14 straight (11-0-3).
- The Penmen honored Gonzalez, Fuentes, Chus Ortega (Santander, Spain), Tyler Kraft (Londonderry, N.H.), Philipp Herrmann (Bruckmuehl, Germany), Martin Zapata (Pamplona, Spain) and Alejo Caceres (Córdoba, Argentina) in a Senior Night ceremony prior to the match.
