Men's Soccer Quartet Collects United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team Honors

All-Americans will be announced Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sophomore Gabriel Castro (León, Spain), junior Alex Pons (Castellón, Spain), graduate student Martin Fuentes (Pamplona, Spain) and senior Philipp Herrmann (Bruckmuehl, Germany), all  of the sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team, received United Soccer Coaches East All-Region First Team accolades Tuesday.

Castro, both a Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) East All-Region and NE10 All-Conference First Team selection, as well as a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District choice, this season, has scored six goals and dished an assist for 13 points, while starting all 20 matches he has played in. Castro, who was a Second Teamer a year ago, is tied for seventh in the NE10 in goals and 10th in points.

Pons, the only Penmen to start all 21 matches, was also a D2CCA East All-Region, NE10 First Teamer and CSC Academic All-District pick this year. Pons has been a key member of a defensive unit that leads the league in goals-against average (0.86) and ranked second in goals allowed (18) at the end of the regular season. Pons has also contributed offensively with six points on a goal and four assists.

Fuentes, who has received D2CCA East All-Region Second Team and NE10 First Team nods this season, has started 20 of the 21 matches he has played in, amassing 30 points on 11 goals and eight assists. He leads the league in game-winning goals (6), points and assists, while ranking second in goals. Nationally, he places third, 15th, 23rd and 26th in those respective categories.

Herrmann, also a D2CCA East All-Region Second Team and NE10 First Team honoree this season, has found the back of the net 10 times for 20 points, tying for third in the conference in goals, while placing fourth in points and game-winning goals (3). Herrmann, who has suited up in all 21 matches, including 20 starts, began the season on fire, scoring a goal in seven of the first eight matches, including five straight to begin the year.

The second-seeded Penmen take on third-seeded Midwester State University in the NCAA Championship national semifinals Friday, Dec. 12 (8 p.m. EST) at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.
