Softball Opens Conference Play With Doubleheader Split at Assumption

Mackenzie Bruggeman Has Four Hits, Three RBIs

Senior Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) collected four hits and drove in a team-high three runs as Southern New Hampshire University softball opened the Northeast-10 Conference with a doubleheader split Monday afternoon at Assumption University.  Senior Amelia Freitas (Plymouth, Mass.) tossed a shutout in a 5-0 win in the first game and the Greyhounds took the night cap 2-1.

GAME 1:  SNHU 5, Assumption 0
  • The Penmen, playing for the first time in nine days after wet weather and conditions forced schedule changes, took a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Junior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) walked and Bruggeman doubled her home.
  • In the third, Resetar doubled, Feldman singled and Bruggemen delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0.
  • The Penmen scored a pair of runs in the fifth with an RBI single by sophomore Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) and a double by junior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.).
  • Freitas allowed only three hits.
GAME 2:  Assumption 2, SNHU 1
  • The Penmen rallied with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, only to fall in the bottom of the inning.
  • Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Molly Green.
  • In the seventh, sophomore Grace Jenkins (Groton, Conn.) doubled to left field, and then scored on a single by Abbott to make it 1-1.
  • A walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a triple won it for the Greyhounds.  Pinch-hitter Grace Heim delivered the game-winning hit.
NOTES
  • Freitas improves to 4-0 over her last five starts, pitching her third shutout of the season.  
  • Bruggeman's 29 hits and .372 average are tops on the team.
  • SNHU's team batting average at .309 is second among NE10 teams - Southern Connecticut is first at .316.
  • Assumption had won six games in a row before the SNHU win in the opener.  
  • The Greyhounds lead the all-time series 46-38 and have won three of the last four games.
  • The teams have also scheduled a non-conference doubleheader at the SNHU Softball Field on April 22 (3 p.m.)
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will make-up a doubleheader on Wednesday (April 2) at 2:30 p.m. at Bentley University
  • The first home games of the season are scheduled for Friday (April 4) at 3:00 p.m. against Saint Michael's College.
