INDIANAPOLIS – The Southern New Hampshire University men's golf team earned the East Region's No. 2 seed and its 14th NCAA Regional berth Friday when the NCAA announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals that were selected to participate in regional competition that will be conducted May 8-10.
The Penmen, who will be making their 11th consecutive appearance (the NCAA Championships were not held in 2020), are one of 10 teams from the East Region that will join 10 teams from the Atlantic Region at Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie, Pa. Gannon University will serve as the host.
At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals, May 19-23 at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year's head-to-head medal play portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
SNHU's best showing at the Atlantic/East Regional came in 2018 when it captured the program's first regional crown and advanced to the NCAA National Championship for the second time in school history, placing 15th. SNHU also finished second at the regionals in 2016 and advanced to the NCAA National Championship, submitting the highest finish for a team from New England since 2004 with a 16th-place performance. Last May, the Penmen were 14th at the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championship in Wheeling, W.Va., through the first two rounds and wound up withdrawing following a long weather delay in the final round.
