PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Senior
Brooke Lefort (Cumberland, RI) matched her career
high with 13 points and hit the game-winning basket with 14 seconds
remaining to lift Southern New Hampshire University to a 54-52
Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Pace University
Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Center. The Penmen, who
won their second straight, improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in
league play, while the Setters are 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the
NE-10.
Lefort matched her career high she
established in a win over Saint Rose on Wednesday by going 6-8 from
the floor. Ashara Carrington (Marblehead,
MA) totaled 11 points for the Penmen, who also got eight points
from Heather Marino (Billerica, MA).
Stephanie Klingele led Pace with 11 points.
SNHU, which trailed 34-25 at
halftime, was down 48-43 with 4:43 left when it ran off six
unanswered points to take a 49-48 lead following back-to-back
layups by Sara Tucker (Red Hook, NY). Pace
would retake the lead on a Kristin Connolly basket, then a
conventional three-point play by Lefort with 1:34 left gave the
Penmen a 52-50 lead.
Stephanie Rossmy would tie the game
for Pace with 1:15 left. SNHU would turn the ball over on its
next possession, but following a foul, Rossmy would miss a pair at
the line. On SNHU's next trip, Lefort scored with 14 seconds
left to give the guests a 54-52 lead, with Andrea
Lozeau (Pelham, NH) assisting on the eventual
game-winner. Pace had two possessions in the final seconds
but missed a potential game-tying basket and turned it over on its
final possession.
Pace jumped out to a 14-4 lead just
4:19 in the game and took its largest lead, 32-19, following a pair
of Rossmy free throws with 3:33 left. The Setters led 34-25
at halftime and 41-32 with 13:15 to go in the second half before
Southern New Hampshire ran off nine unanswered points to tie the
game at 41 following a Kristen Anderson (Hooksett,
NH) three-pointer at the 10:34 mark.
The Penmen, who outrebounded Pace
42-41, held the Setters to 25% shooting in the second half and
forced 27 Pace turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire's next game
comes Tuesday when the Penmen travel to Saint Anselm College for a
5:30 contest.
