MANCHESTER, N.H. - Johannah Leedham
(Ellesmere Point, England) totaled 23 points to lead Franklin
Pierce University to a 79-70 Northeast-10 women's basketball
victory Wednesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Ravens
improved to 8-1 and 6-1 in league play, while the Penmen are now
3-5 and 3-4 in the NE-10.
Leedham finished 7-12 from the
field and 9-13 at the free throw line. Vanessa
Power (Mildura, Australia) was the only other Raven in
double figures as she totaled 14 points on the strength of four
three-pointers. Jennifer Leedham (Ellesmere
Point, England) added nine points for the guests.
Stephanie Houghton
(Manchester, NH) was 7-10 from the floor and finished with a
season-high 19 points while dishing out a career-best seven
assists. Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH)
totaled 13 points, while Megan Shay (Candor, NY)
recorded 10 points, her third-straight double digit scoring effort.
Franklin Pierce outscored SNHU 18-7
over the first 10:24 of the second half to take a 57-49 lead on a
layup by Jennifer Leedham. The Penmen would answer with a
10-3 spurt and a basket by Houghtaling at the 6:40 mark cut FPU's
lead to one, 60-59. The Ravens countered by scoring 10
unanswered points and a Jess McPherson (Croydon,
Australia) basket with 4:28 left made it 70-59. The Penmen
would get it down to six, 72-66, with 1:01 left on a Houghton
three, but the Ravens sealed the win by going 7-10 at the charity
stripe over the final minute.
SNHU jumped out to a 16-8 lead 6:31
into the contest following a basket by Houghtaling, but the guests
would go on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 20 on a pair of free
throws by Toby Martin (Wayne, ME). Martin
would put the Ravens up 30-22 with 8:16 left on a three-pointer,
but the Penmen ran off 14 unanswered points to take a 36-30 lead on
a three by Kristen Anderson (Hooksett, NH) with
3:17 before halftime. Southern New Hampshire led 42-39 at
halftime.
Both teams shot 51.7% (15-29) over
the opening 20 minutes but FPU shot 11-21 (52.4%) in the second
half to shoot 52% for the contest, while SNHU was 10-27 in the
second half and 44.6% for the game. Both teams grabbed 30
rebounds.
SNHU returns to action Sunday
afternoon when it hosts Bentley College in a 1:30 game at the SNHU
Fieldhouse. Franklin Pierce faces Post University Friday in
the first round of the Post University Classic.
