Women's Basketball Earns 10th Win, Pulls Away from New Haven

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) totaled 20 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 69-50 victory over the University of New Haven in a women's basketball contest at Charger Gymnasium Monday afternoon.  The Penmen, who have won three straight and five out of their last six, improve to 10-8, while the Chargers, who lead the East Coast Conference standings, are now 9-7 on the year.

With the win, the Penmen, under third-year head coach Karen Pinkos, have posted their highest victory total since the 1991-92 season when SNHU finished with a 12-17 record.

Houghtaling finished 7-11 from the floor and 6-7 at the free throw line.  Sara Tucker (Red Hook, NY) finished with 15 points on 6-8 shooting for the Penmen, who also got nine points from Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH).  Helin Marte was the lone Charger in double figures as she finished with 13 points.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 10-6 lead 6:42 into the game before New Haven used a 7-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with 11:26 before halftime on a Lindsay Salt basket.  The Penmen countered with 15 unanswered points and a basket by Houghton with 3:51 to go gave SNHU a 25-13 lead.  The guests took their largest lead 33-18, with 1:31 before intermission on a pair of Tucker free throws and led 33-20 at the break.

The two teams traded baskets early in the second half and SNHU held a 44-34 lead with 14:41 to play following a Houghton three-pointer.  The Chargers would then go on a 10-4 run and a three by Briiana Rende with 8:18 left cut the Penmen advantage to four, 48-44.  Southern New Hampshire would respond with a 13-2 run capped by a Tucker basket with four minutes to play that made it 61-46, and the Penmen would close the contest by outscoring New Haven 21-6 over the final eight minutes as after Rende's three the Chargers did not have another field goal until a Marte basket with 44 seconds to go.

SNHU limited New Haven to 26.7% shooting for the contest and held a 47-37 rebounding advantage.

SNHU returns to action Saturday when it travels to defending Division II national champion Southern Connecticut State University for a 1:30 contest.
