Women's Basketball Pushes Past Purple Knights

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sara Tucker (Red Hook, NY) went 7-8 from the floor and totaled 13 of her 17 points in the second half as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 65-45 women's basketball victory over the University of Bridgeport Monday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Penmen, who have won three of their last four and matched last season's win total with the victory, improve to 6-7 overall, while the Purple Knights are now 5-7 on the year.

Tucker also made all three of her free throw attempts to account for her 17 points.  Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) totaled 11 points, five rebounds and four steals while Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA) added eight points.  Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) handed out six assists.  The 45 points surrendered by the Penmen marked the fewest since a 45-42 loss to Southern Connecticut on December 8, 2004.

Shannon Malone (Melbourne, Australia) led Bridgeport with 11 points while Sidney Parsons (Chandler, AZ) added eight points for the Purple Knights.

SNHU never trailed and used a 11-1 run late in the first half capped by a layup by Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME) at the 2:58 mark to take a 30-17 lead.  The Penmen would take a 32-22 lead into the break.    The Purple Knights got the lead down to eight twice early in the second half but the hosts put the game away with 11 unanswered points to take a 47-28 lead with 11:55 to go on a Carrington basket.  SNHU took its largest lead with just under four minutes to go when a pair of Andrea Lozeau (Pelham, NH) free throws made it 63-37.

Southern New Hampshire committed a season-low 10 turnovers while forcing 23 Bridgeport giveaways that led to 31 Penmen points.  The guests held a 36-32 rebounding advantage.

SNHU returns to Northeast-10 play Thursday night when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a 5:30 tilt at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
