BOX SCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Kristy McLean went 12-14 at the free
throw line and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead
Bentley University to a 63-59 win over Southern New Hampshire
University in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at
the SNHU Fieldhouse. Bentley improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1
in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 1-1 and 0-1 in the league.
McLean led three Falcons in double
figures as Kim Brennan and Angela Manfredi each totaled 14 points
and six rebounds. Lauren Massie added eight points and six
boards for Bentley. Julia Houghtaling
(Franconia, NH) led SNHU with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while
Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) added 14
points. Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA)
totaled nine points and nine rebounds, all in the second half,
while Christine Duffy (South Boston, MA) dished
out seven assists.
SNHU, which trailed 35-34 at
intermission, used an early 7-1 run to take a 43-42 lead with just
under 15 minutes to play on a free throw by Carrington.
Massie would convert a layup on Bentley's next possession, but
Carrington responded with a layup on SNHU's next possession to
retake the lead.
The Penmen would maintain a slim
lead until the 7:45 mark when a three by Meagan Lambros gave
Bentley a 53-52 advantage. Carrington would convert a putback
on the next possession to give SNHU the lead back, but the Falcons
would counter with eight unanswered points and a conventional
three-point play by Brennan with 4:29 left made it 61-54.
SNHU would cut it to 61-58 with 3:34 left on a Houghtaling basket,
but that would be as close as the hosts would get. Neither
team scored over the game's final 2:49.
Southern New Hampshire came out
strong and built a 21-8 lead 9:16 into the contest following a pair
of free throws by Houghton and held a 27-15 lead with 8:03 before
halftime before Bentley scored eight straight to make it 27-23 with
5:49 left on a Manfredi layup. The Penmen owned a 34-29 lead
with 2:52 left following a Houghton three-pointer, but the guests
scored the final six points of the half and a pair of free throws
by Brennan with 1:13 left gave Bentley a 35-34 lead which it
carried into halftime.
The Penmen held a 48-39 rebounding
advantage, including a 20-12 edge on the offensive glass. The
big difference came at the free throw line, as the Falcons were
23-30 at the stripe, while Southern New Hampshire was just 14-23,
including 5-12 in the second half.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Monday night when it travels to Merrimack College for a 5:30
contest.
