Women's Basketball Edged by No. 5 Stonehill 79-77

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Bethany Tighe led all scorers with 24 points as No. 5 Stonehill College edged upset-minded Southern New Hampshire University 79-77 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Skyhawks improve to 5-1 and 3-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 2-2 and 1-2 in the league.

Tighe finished 9-11 from the floor and led three Stonehill players in double figures while also handing out five assists.  Emily Rousseau went 13-14 at the free throw line and finished with 19 points and four assists for the Skyhawks, while Kelsey Simonds was 7-13 from the floor and finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) led Southern New Hampshire with 20 points on 6-10 shooting and 8-10 shooting from the free throw line.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA) finished with a career-best 18 points while also grabbing four rebounds for the Penmen, while Christine Duffy (South Boston, MA) drained three three-pointers and added nine points.  Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME) also added nine points for SNHU.

SNHU trailed 69-59 with just over four minutes to play but chipped away at the Stonehill lead and got it down to four, 73-69, with 1:04 left on a pair of free throws by Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH).  The Skyhawks reclaimed an eight-point lead following four straight points by Rousseau, but the Penmen would again chip away and get it down to four with nine seconds left on a basket by Carrington.  Simonds would get fouled and make 1-of-2 at the line with 8.9 seconds left.  Duffy drained an NBA-range three at the buzzer to account for the final.

Stonehill outscored SNHU 12-5 over the first four minutes of the second half to take a 46-38 lead on a layup by Tighe with 15:56 left.  The Skyhawks would push the lead to 53-43 with 10:11 left on another Tighe basket.  The Penmen cut it to four, 61-57, with 5:45 on the clock on a layup by Houghtaling, but Stonehill responded with six straight points to make it 67-57 with 4:40 to go.

The Penmen used an early 14-2 run to take a 16-6 lead with 11:27 left in the first half following a fast-break layup by Smith.  Stonehill responded by scoring 12 unanswered points in a span of 3:56 to take a 20-18 lead with 6:05 before halftime on an Erin Gray layup.  The two teams would then trade the lead 14 times over the final six minutes, with neither side claiming more than a one point advantage.  The Skyhawks would take a 34-33 lead into halftime when Emily Rousseau converted a pair of free throws with seven seconds on the clock.

Stonehill shot 50% (15-30) over the final 20 minutes and 49.1% for the game, while the Penmen shot 44.6% for the game.  The Skyhawks were 18-22 at the free throw line while SNHU converted 22 of its 29 free throw attempts.  The Penmen held a 34-31 rebounding advantage.

The SNHU women's basketball team returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Saint Michael's College for a 5:30 contest.
