DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA)
finished with 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead five
Southern New Hampshire University players in double figures as it
posted a 89-74 women's basketball victory over Mercy College
Saturday afternoon. The Penmen won their second straight to
even their record at 4-4, while the Mavericks are now 1-7 on the
season.
Carrington finished 11-13 from the
free throw line and recorded a double-double in the first half with
11 points and 10 boards. She recorded her second
double-double of the season while playing just 18 minutes.
Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) drained three of
her four three-point attempts and finished with 15 points.
Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME) totaled 14 points and
seven rebounds, going 6-10 from the floor, while Stephanie
Houghton (Manchester, NH) and Julia
Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) each added 12 points.
Houghton also drained three of her four three-point attempts while
dishing out four assists, while Houghtaling was 5-8 from the field.
Christina Baxter led Mercy with a
game-high 21 points while Jazmin Steele totaled 13 points and
Delmara Reece 10.
Southern New Hampshire opened a
32-14 lead with 6:33 left in the first half following a 22-6 run
capped by a Carrington basket. The Mavericks would outscore
the Penmen 15-1 over the next 4:27 and a layup by Reece 2:06 before
intermission cut the SNHU advantage to four, 33-29. The
guests responded with six straight points and a Houghtaling layup
with 47 seconds left made it 40-29. SNHU would hold a 40-31
lead at halftime.
The Penmen opened the second half
on a 15-6 run and a basket by Smith with just under 16 minutes to
play gave them a 55-37 lead. Mercy countered with a 15-2
spurt and drew to within five, 57-52, with 12:40 left on a
three-pointer by Baxter. SNHU scored 19 of the next 27 points
and a basket by Houghton with 7:39 to play gave the Penmen a 76-60
lead. Southern New Hampshire would maintain at least an
11-point advantage the rest of the way.
Southern New Hampshire held a
commanding 49-31 rebounding advantage while also connecting on nine
of its 14 three-point attempts. The Penmen shot 51% from the
floor for the game and 26-35 (74%) from the free throw line, while
the Mavericks only converted 12 of their 22 free throw
chances. SNHU was slowed by 26 turnovers.
SNHU is idle until Sunday, December
21, when it travels to Saint Anselm College for a 1:30
non-conference contest.
