MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jenny McDade (Derry,
NH) and Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) each
totaled 12 points as Southern New Hampshire University posted a
67-47 non-conference women's basketball victory over Saint Anselm
College Sunday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The
Penmen won their third in a row to improve to 5-4, while the Hawks
are now 2-8 on the season.
The 12 points marked a career high
for McDade, who connected on a pair of three-pointers and was 4-4
at the free throw line. Houghton was 4-8 from the
floor. Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH)
finished with 10 points from the Penmen, who also got nine points
from Brooke Lefort (Cumberland, RI) and eight
points, four assists and four rebounds from Christine
Duffy (South Boston, MA).
Megan Howard totaled 14 points and
11 rebounds to lead Saint Anselm while Jennifer Gureckis finished
with 12 points.
SNHU and Saint Anselm traded the
lead seven times in the game's opening minutes before the Penmen
took control with a 9-0 run capped by a McDade basket at the 9:21
mark of the first half to give SNHU a 19-11 lead. The Penmen
would take their largest lead of the first half 2:48 before
intermission when Megan Smith's (Smithfield, ME)
jumper capped a 6-0 run. Southern New Hampshire took a 31-21
lead into the locker room when Duffy had a steal and an open layup
in the final seconds of the first half.
Saint Anselm's Courtney May hit a
pair of free throws 24 seconds into the second half to cut the lead
to eight, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get as
Southern New Hampshire went on a 9-0 run capped by a layup by
Lefort at the 15:01 mark to take a 40-23 lead. The Penmen
would maintain a double-digit advantage the rest of the way and
took their largest lead, 57-32, with just under seven minutes to go
when Houghton made 1-of-2 at the free throw line.
Southern New Hampshire held Saint
Anselm to just 25.4% shooting from the floor for the game,
including 23.3% (7-30) over the final 20 minutes. The Penmen
generated a 28-14 advantage in free throw opportunities, going
22-28 from the stripe while the Hawks were a perfect 14-14.
SNHU forced 26 turnovers, but was outrebounded 41-35. The
guests held a 26-2 advantage in bench scoring, with 10 Penmen
reaching the scoring column.
SNHU returns to action December 29
when it travels to face Dowling College in a 5:30 game in the first
round of the Park Lodge Holiday Classic hosted by Bentley
University.
NOTES: SNHU has
won six of the last seven meetings with Saint Anselm after going
4-37 in the series' first 41 meetings...the Penmen have posted
their best record after nine games (5-4) since doing the same in
1990-91.
