WALTHAM, Mass. - Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME)
poured in a career-high 17 points to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to a 90-70 women's basketball victory over Dowling
College in the first round of the Park Lodge Hotel Group
Classic at Bentley University's Dana Center Monday night. The
Penmen won their fourth in a row to improve to 6-4 overall, marking
their best record after 10 games since 1989-90, while the Golden
Lions saw a six-game win streak snapped as they fell to 8-2 on the
season.
Smith finished 6-7 from the floor
and also grabbed seven rebounds. Jenny
McDade (Derry, NH) also finished with a career-high 15
points off the bench while grabbing 10 rebounds.
Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) totaled 12
points and six assists while Julia Houghtaling
(Franconia, NH) added 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) had 11 points and
five rebounds while Christine Duffy (South Boston,
MA) had six points while dishing out eight assists.
Molly Tubridy led Dowling with 18
points.
SNHU opened a 12-5 lead five
minutes into the game and led 20-14 with 9:44 left in the first
half following a conventional three-point play by Duffy. The
Golden Lions scored the game's next eight points and took a 22-20
lead on a Michele Yawn three-pointer 6:22 before
intermission. The Penmen used a late 14-2 run capped by a
three-pointer by Houghton with 22 seconds left to make it 40-27,
and SNHU led 40-29 at halftime.
The Penmen outscored Dowling 18-8
over the first 4:50 of the second half and a layup by Smith at the
15:10 mark gave Southern New Hampshire a 58-37 lead. SNHU
maintained at least a 16 point advantage and took its largest lead,
82-54, with 4:15 to go on a layup by McDade.
SNHU shot 63.6% in the second half
and 54.7% from the floor for the game while limiting the Golden
Lions to 34.8% shooting for the contest. The Penmen held a
53-33 rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action in the second round of the Park Lodge Hotel Group Classic
Tuesday when it faces the University of Bridgeport in a 5:30
contest at the Dana Center.
