Leedham was 8-17 from the floor and totaled 30 points as No. 6
Franklin Pierce University withstood a late Southern New Hampshire
University rally to post a 68-61 Northeast-10 women's basketball
victory at Keene State College's Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday
afternoon. The Ravens improved to 4-2 and 3-2 in the NE-10,
while the Penmen are now 2-4 and 1-4 in the league.
Leedham, the reigning WBCA Division
II Player of the Year, was also 12-16 from the free throw line and
recorded eight steals. Tori Ahrens totaled 12 points and nine
rebounds for the Ravens, while Jennifer Leedham was 8-9 at the free
throw line and also finished with 12 points.
Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, MA) led Southern New Hampshire with 14 points and 11
rebounds off the bench, while Megan Smith
(Smithfield, ME) matched her career high with 14 points.
Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) added 11
points for the Penmen, while Magdala Johnson
(Sandown, NH) connected on a pair of three pointers and finished
with eight points.
Franklin Pierce led by as many as
16 points in the second half and led 55-41 with just over eight
minutes left when the Penmen went on a 12-2 run and a layup by
Smith with 4:44 to play made it a 57-53 game. The Penmen
would get within three, 64-61, with 1:08 to play when Carrington
made 1-of-2 at the line. The Ravens would seal the win by
going 4-of-6 at the free throw line over the final 31
seconds. SNHU would misfire on a pair of three-point attempts
down the stretch.
Southern New Hampshire held an
18-14 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the first half
following a layup by Johnson, but the Ravens would score 11
unanswered points and took a 25-18 lead with 2:30 to play following
a pair of free throws by Jennifer Leedham. Franklin Pierce
would take a 29-20 lead into the locker room.
The Penmen limited the Ravens to
just 34.5% shooting for the contest and 2-14 shooting from behind
the arc, however SNHU shot just 38.5% as a team while connecting on
four of 16 three-point attempts. Franklin Pierce, which
outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 40-35, was 28-40 at the free
throw line while the Penmen connected on 17 of their 22
chances. SNHU was also hurt by 26 turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire is back in
action Tuesday when it hosts New Haven in a 5:30 contest at the
SNHU Fieldhouse.
