MANCHESTER, N.H. - Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH)
registered 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Southern New
Hampshire University to a 67-60 Northeast-10 women's basketball
victory over the University of New Haven Tuesday night at the SNHU
Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who snapped a three-game slide with
the win, improve to 3-4 and 2-4 in the NE-10, while the Chargers,
who are in their first year in the league, are now 5-3 and 4-3 in
conference.
Houghtaling finished 7-11 from the
floor. Christine Duffy (South Boston, MA)
was the other Penmen player in double figures, as she was 6-9
overall and 2-2 from three-point land to score 14 points.
Duffy also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Lauren Hood led New Haven with 15
points while Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty totaled 11 points for the
Chargers.
SNHU held New Haven scoreless for a
six-minute stretch in the first half and scored 13 unanswered
points to take a 19-6 lead on a layup by Houghtaling with 9:44 left
before halftime. The Penmen maintained at least an seven
point advantage the rest of the half and held a 35-25 lead at
halftime.
New Haven got back into the game
midway through the second half, using a 13-5 spurt to tie the game
49-49 with 7:45 to play on a layup by Hood. The Chargers
would take their first lead since scoring the game's first basket
with 6:52 to play when Natasha Pierre-Louis made 1-of-2 at the line
to make it 50-49.
The guests' lead would be
short-lived, as Jenny McDade (Derry, NH) converted
a conventional three-point play on the next SNHU possession to make
it 52-50 in favor of the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire
outscored New Haven 12-2 over the next 4:18 to take a 61-52 lead
with 2:34 remaining. The lead would grow as large as 13 in
the final minutes before the Chargers closed by scoring the game's
final six points.
SNHU limited New Haven to just
31.1% shooting for the contest and to just 2-12 behind the
arc. The Penmen shot 48.1% for the game. New Haven held
a 50-43 rebounding advantage, including a 25-8 edge on the
offensive glass, but converted their 25 offensive boards into just
11 second chance points.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Mercy College for a 12:00 game.
