MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Nick Cotter (Whitby, Ontario) totaled six goals to
lead No. 5 Dowling College to a 15-10 men's lacrosse victory over
Southern New Hampshire University Saturday at Larkin Field.
The Golden Lions improve to 5-1 on the season, while it marked the
season opener for the Penmen.
John McClure
(Brampton, NY) was the only other Dowling player with multiple
goals as he struck for three goals and an assist.
Kyle O'Brien (Whitby, NY) and Eddie
Hoctor (Selden, NY) each added a goal and an assist for
the Golden Lions.
Sophomore Mike
Ball (Salem, NH) led Southern New Hampshire with four
goals on the afternoon, while his brother, junior Sean
Ball (Salem, NH) totaled three goals and an assist.
John Delanoy (Lansdale, PA) handed out three
assists while freshman Keith Merluzzo (Billerica,
MA) added a goal and an assist. Chris
Dindler (Stepheney, Australia) and Gary
McKay (Billerica, MA) had SNHU's other goals.
Dowling led by five goals three
times, the last coming 2:58 into the fourth quarter when Kenny
Wenke (West Babylon, NY) scored a man-down goal to make it
12-7. The Penmen would rally with three unanswered goals, and
Sean Ball's goal with 9:47 to play made it 12-10. However,
the Golden Lions would hold SNHU scoreless the rest of the way and
added three more goals over the final 5:21.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to a 2-0 lead 4:34 into the contest. Sean Ball scored just 32
seconds into the contest on a feed from Spencer
Rennick (Peabody, MA) to make it 1-0, and another Sean
Ball goal at the 4:34 mark gave the Penmen a two-goal lead.
Dowling would score three times in the rest of the frame, with a
McClure goal 22 seconds before the end of the quarter giving the
guests a 3-2 lead after one period.
Nick Tracey (Farmingville, NY) went
the distance in goal for Dowling and made 13 saves en route to the
victory. Eric Gunst (Exeter, NH) took the
loss in net for SNHU, playing the final 19:17 in relief of starting
goalie Mickey Hover (Montgomery, NJ) and allowing
five goals and making five saves. Hover stopped 11 shots and
allowed 10 goals.
Dowling outshot Southern New
Hampshire 43-40. The Penmen were 4-9 on extra-man
opportunities while the Golden Lions were 3-6.
SNHU opens Northeast-10 play next
Saturday when it travels to Pace University for a 1:00 contest.
