BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Defending Northeast-10 regular season
champion Le Moyne College swept a softball doubleheader from
Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 8-2 and 9-7 Saturday
afternoon at Bridgewater State College. The Dolphins improved
to 13-7 and 2-0 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 3-6 and 0-2
in the league.
In the second game, Le Moyne
rallied from a 7-6 deficit by scoring three runs in the top of the
seventh. Sarah Reed was 4-4 with two RBI for the Dolphins,
while Kelly Schweikert was 3-4 with an RBI. Caitlin O'Neill
also drove in a pair of runs. For Southern New Hampshire,
Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) was 2-4 with a
two-run home run, while Karissa Bettencourt
(Norton, MA) and Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH)
were each 2-4 with two RBI. Andrea Clausi
(Kingston, NY) and Laurie Boland (Worcester, MA)
also had two hits apiece.
Caylinn Christopherson earned the
win for Le Moyne, pitching the final three innings in relief of
starter Jenna Vanacore and giving up just two hits.
Mary Bradford (Big Bear, CA) took the loss going
the distance for the Penmen.
In the opener, Le Moyne used a
five-run second inning to jump out to an early lead. Emma
Murphy had three hits for the Dolphins, while Reed and Jennifer
Farrelly each drove in a pair of runs. Bernstein and Clausi
each had a pair of hits for the Penmen, while Valerie
Martins (Somerset, MA) and Guertin each drove in runs as
SNHU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.
Reed earned the win on the mound
for Le Moyne, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing seven hits while
fanning four. Bernstein took the loss for SNHU.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Thursday, April 3, when it is scheduled to host Bryant
University.
