MANCHESTER, N.H. - Mary Bradford (Big
Bear, CA) threw a complete-game two hit shutout in the nightcap of
a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader between Southern New Hampshire
University and American International College to give the Penmen a
3-0 victory. The Yellow Jackets earned an 8-2 win in the
first game. SNHU is now 7-10 overall and 4-6 in NE-10 play,
while the Yellow Jackets are 14-17 and 5-11 in the league.
Bradford allowed just two hits, a
bloop single in the first to Kayla Donnelly and a double down the
line by Tara Demontier in the seventh. She fanned five
batters and walked just two. All nine Penmen batters had
exactly one hit as the hosts outhit AIC 9-2.
Southern New Hampshire got on the
board with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, MA) led off with a
walk and scored on a sac fly by Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA). Andrea Clausi (Kingston,
NY) drove in the second run when her single plated Laurie
Boland (Worcester, MA). The Penmen scored their
other run in the fourth when Casey Stoodley
(Salem, NH) led off the inning with a double and scored when
Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) reached on an
error.
In the opener, American
International scored three times in the third and added two runs
apiece in the fifth and sixth before adding one more in the
seventh. The Yellow Jackets also took advantage of four SNHU
fielding errors. Demontier led AIC with three hits, while
Michelle Franey had two hits.
The Penmen scored their only two
runs in the bottom of the seventh when a single by Michelle
Maranto (East Hampstead, NH) scored Valerie
Martins (Somerset, MA) and Guertin. Maranto had a
pair of hits in the opener.
Bernstein took the loss on the
hill, surrendering nine hits and striking out three while walking
five.
SNHU returns to action Sunday when
it travels to Southern Connecticut for a 1:00 doubleheader.
