NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Host Southern Connecticut State
University swept a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Southern
New Hampshire University by scores of 5-2 and 6-5 on Sunday
afternoon. The Owls improve to 14-21 overall and 7-7 in the
NE-10, while the Penmen are now 7-12 and 4-8 in league play.
In the opener, Southern Connecticut
took control of the game with a four-run third and added another
run in the bottom of the sixth. The Penmen would score their
only two runs in the top of the sixth. A double by
Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, MA) scored
pinch-runner Megan Renning (Enosburg Falls,
VT). Pessotti would later score on a base hit by
Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH).
Mary Bradford (Big
Bear, CA) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, scattering six
hits and fanning three.
After the Owls scored a single run
in the bottom of the first in game two, the Penmen scored twice in
the top of the second. Michelle Maranto
(East Hampstead, NH) would lead off the inning with a home run to
left center. The second run would score when Nicole
Arpin (Cheshire, CT) lifted a sacrifice fly to center that
scored Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA).
Southern Connecticut would tie the
game in the bottom of the second and add another run in the third
to take a 3-2 lead before the Penmen scored three more times to
take a 5-3 lead in the fourth when Andrea Clausi
(Kingston, NY) belted a three-run home run. The Owls would
tie the game in the fifth and score the winning run in the sixth
when Megan Caparossi belted a solo home run.
Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA) allowed 10 hits while taking the loss for
SNHU. Guertin extended her hitting streak to seven games.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Wednesday when it travels to Assumption College for a
3:30 twinbill.
