Saint Anselm Edges Men's Lacrosse in OT

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Chris Murphy (Winchester, MA) scored seven goals, including the game-winner 18 seconds into overtime, and added two assists as Saint Anselm College rallied from a 13-9 deficit after three quarters to post a 15-14 Northeast-10 men's lacrosse victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Larkin Field Tuesday night.  The Hawks improved to 6-5 and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 5-4 and 4-3 in the league.

Saint Anselm trailed 13-9 heading into the fourth quarter after SNHU's Mike Ball (Salem, NH) scored with four seconds left in the third period.  The Hawks would score five straight goals in the fourth and took a 14-13 lead with 2:56 left on a Steve Trocki (Braintree, MA) goal, his third goal in a row in a span of 5:46.  Southern New Hampshire would force overtime with 1:02 left when Ball found Keith Merluzzo (Billerica, MA) open for his fifth goal of the game.

The Hawks would control the faceoff to start overtime and immediately called timeout.  Out of the timeout, Murphy took the ball on the right side, got past an SNHU defender and fired a low shot past Penmen keeper Eric Gunst (Exeter, NH).

Southern New Hampshire trailed just once in the early going and led 4-3 after one quarter and 8-6 at halftime.  Murphy would get the Hawks back within two, 11-9, with just over a minute left in the third quarter, but Spencer Rennick (Peabody, MA) and Ball would score twice in the final 10 seconds of the third to give the hosts a 13-9 lead with one quarter left.

Trocki finished with three goals for Saint Anselm, while Matt Surette (Wakefield, MA) added two goals.  Merluzzo finished with five goals and an assist for Southern New Hampshire, which also got two goals and an assist from Ball and Chris Dindler (Stephney, Australia).  John Delanoy (Lansdale, PA) also finished with a pair of goals.

Dan Flynn (Wakefield, MA) earned the win in goal for Saint Anselm, stopping 15 shots.  Gunst made 13 saves for the Penmen, who were outshot 53-49.
