COLCHESTER, Vt. - Southern New Hampshire University swept
a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Saint Michael's College
by scores of 2-1 and 5-4 Thursday afternoon. The Penmen
improved to 9-12 and 6-8 in NE-10 play, while the Purple Knights
are now 7-16 and 1-13 in the league.
Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) would provide the game-winning
run in the top of the fifth of game one when she belted a solo home
run to make it 2-1. The Penmen had tied the game one inning
earlier when Ashley Guertin's (Manchester, NH)
double scored Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA).
Bernstein earned the win for SNHU
on the mound, going the distance and scattering six hits while
striking out six and walking no one. Megan O'Connor was the
hard-luck loser for SMC, allowing just three hits.
SNHU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in
the second game. Casey Stoodley (Salem, NH)
got the Penmen on the board when she belted a two-run home
run. The next batter, Michelle Maranto (East
Hampstead, NH), doubled and scored when Bernstein reached on an
error. Bernstein would score the fourth run when she came
home on a double by Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY).
The Penmen would score their other
run in the third when Stoodley led off the frame with a single and
came home on another Clausi double. The Purple Knights did
not get on the board until the sixth and scored three times in the
seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.
Stoodley and Clausi each finished
with two hits and two RBI. Mary Bradford
(Big Bear, CA) did not allow a hit for the first 3.2 innings and
earned the win while fanning two.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to C.W. Post for a noon twinbill.
