Softball Swept by UMass Lowell

MANCHESTER, N.H. - UMass Lowell swept a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 3-0 and 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at Penmen Field.  The River Hawks improved to 20-18 overall and 13-5 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen are now 10-17 and 6-10 in the league.

In the opener, the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first when a single by Hilary Hopkins scored Julie Brodie. UMass Lowell would plate its other two runs in the fifth.  Stephanie Rollo worked a bases-loaded walk to score Stacey LaJoie, while Brodie would score the third run on a single by Emily Wolf.

Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) was 3-3 at the plate in the opener for SNHU, while Casey Stoodley (Salem, NH) recorded a pair of hits.  Lajoie led UMass Lowell with three hits.  Lindsay Farmer earned the win for UML, allowing seven hits in a complete game effort.  Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) took the loss, allowing eight hits and striking out four.

UMass Lowell would get all the runs it needed in the first two innings of the nightcap.  Brodie would score the game's first run when Jachael Guanci reached on an error.  The River Hawks scored two more times in the second.  Hannah May led off the inning by reaching on an error and scored when Lajoie grounded out to the left side.  Heather Ross would make it 3-0 when she scored on a sacrifice fly by Laurie Tanguay.

SNHU would score its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Stoodley scored on a single up the middle by Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA).

Nicole Monroe held the Penmen to just three hits in the nightcap.  Mary Bradford (Big Bear, CA) took the loss, allowing no earned runs while scattering eight hits and fanning three.  Stoodley was 1-3 in the nightcap and extended her hitting streak to seven games.

SNHU returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Merrimack College for a 3:30 twinbill.
