MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting Southern New Hampshire
University split a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader with Saint
Anselm College Thursday afternoon, dropping the first game 3-0
before outslugging the Hawks in an 11-2, five-inning win in the
nightcap. The Penmen are now 13-18 overall and 9-11 in the
NE-10, while the Hawks are 19-14-1 and 13-10-1 in the league.
After dropping the first game, the
Penmen jumped all over the hosts with a five run first
inning. SNHU recorded four hits while also taking advantage
of a pair of Hawk errors. Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA) delivered a two-run single while Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, MA) also had an RBI single.
Southern New Hampshire then tacked on two runs in the third, one in
the fourth and closed out the scoring in the fifth when
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) delivered a three-run
double to left-center.
Clausi was 3-4 with four RBI in the
nightcap while Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, MA),
Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA) and Laurie
Boland (Worcester, MA) all had two hits apiece.
Boland also drove in a pair of runs. Mary
Bradford (Big Bear, CA) earned the win, giving up seven
hits in five innings.
In game one, Southern New Hampshire
was held to just four hits as Saint Anselm manufactured single runs
in the first, third and fourth innings. Casey
Stoodley (Salem, NH) had a sixth inning single to extend
her hitting streak to 10 games before she went hitless in the
nightcap to see her string come to an end.
Bernstein took the loss in a
complete-game effort for SNHU.
Southern New Hampshire hosts Saint
Rose in a doubleheader Friday at 3:00.
