Setters Sweep Softball

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. - Host Pace University swept a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 7-3 and 3-1 Saturday afternoon.  The Setters improve to 26-18 and 14-12 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 15-20 and 11-13 in the league.

In the opener, both teams would score single runs in the first before SNHU took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.  Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) would lead off the inning with a solo home run, with the Penmen scoring the second run when Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) and Elena Anderson (Salem, WI) recorded back-to-back doubles.  In the bottom of the inning, Pace would score five times, utilizing three hits, two walks, an error and a wild pitch to take a 6-3 lead.  The Setters would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA) worked a bases-loaded walk to score Casey Stoodley (Salem, NH).  Clausi had two of SNHU's eight hits in the opener.  Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) worked three-plus innings on the mound for the Penmen and took the loss.

Pace took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two, but the Penmen would tie the score in the top of the second.  Clausi worked a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a two-out single to left by Martins.  The Setters would manufacture solo runs in the third and fifth innings to secure the sweep.

Laurie Boland (Worcester, MA) finished with two hits in the nightcap for Southern New Hampshire.  Mary Bradford (Big Bear, CA) allowed seven hits in six innings of work to take the loss.  Bernstein had one hit in each game to extend her hit streak to eight games.

Southern New Hampshire hosts its final home doubleheader of the season Sunday when it entertains Stonehill College in a 1:00 doubleheader.
