MANCHESTER, N.H. - Stephanie
Houghton (Manchester, NH) totaled a season-high 19
points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 64-57
Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over The College of Saint
Rose at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Penmen
won their third in a row and eighth in their last nine games to
improve to 10-5 and 5-5 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights are
now 9-6 and 4-6 in the league.
Houghton, who also grabbed six
rebounds, went 6-7 from the floor and connected on both of her
three-point attempts while also going 5-6 at the free throw
line. Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, MA) went 7-10 from the floor and finished with 16
points and five rebounds, while Julia
Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) added nine points and
seven rebounds.
Lauren Revesz led Saint Rose with
16 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Elizabeth
Buckley registered 14 points, while Dana Brown added 13 points.
Southern New Hampshire led
virtually the entire second half and used a 7-0 spurt to take its
largest lead of the game, 52-42, with 5:08 to play on a layup by
Houghton. Saint Rose then used a 10-2 run of its own to cut
the lead to two, 54-52, with 2:08 to play on an Ashley Anderson
layup. The Penmen would counter on their next possession when
Carrington converted a tough layup under the basket with 1:53 to
play to up the lead to four.
Saint Rose came up empty on its
next possession and the Penmen converted 3-of-4 at the line to make
it 59-52 with 50 seconds to play. Buckley would hit a three
with 25 seconds left to cut the lead to four, but SNHU went 5-6 at
the line the rest of the way to seal the win.
Neither side led by more than five
points in a first half that saw six ties and eight lead
changes. The Penmen took a 24-23 lead with 1:14 left in the
first frame on a three from the right corner by Houghton, but Saint
Rose scored the final four points of the first half and a layup by
Liz Tremblay with 23 seconds before halftime gave the Golden
Knights a 27-24 lead at intermission.
Southern New Hampshire shot 62.5%
(15-24) over the final 20 minutes and 51.1% for the game while
limiting Saint Rose to 33.8% shooting for the game. The
Penmen also generated 12 more free throw opportunities, going 14-20
from the stripe while Saint Rose was 7-8. SNHU held a 37-34
rebounding advantage.
SNHU is idle until next Saturday
when it travels to Assumption College for a 1:30 contest.
NOTES: With two
assists Saturday, Houghton moved into 10th place on
SNHU's career assists list...she also jumped two places to
18th on the school scoring list...Carrington earned her
first start of the season after coming off the bench in 13 of
SNHU's first 14 games.
