WORCESTER, Mass. - Despite a career-high
24 points from Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, MA), the Southern New Hampshire University women's
basketball team fell to host Assumption College 67-58 Saturday
afternoon at Laska Gymnasium in a Northeast-10 contest. The
Greyhounds won their third straight to improve to 9-6 and 7-4 in
the NE-10, while the Penmen saw a three-game win streak snapped and
are now 10-6 and 5-6 in the league.
Carrington went 8-14 from the floor
and 8-12 at the free throw line and also grabbed four rebounds in
just 23 minutes of action. Megan Smith
(Smithfield, ME) was the other Penmen player in double figures as
she finished with 10 points on 5-6 shooting. Alyssa Whitney
(Somerville, MA) totaled nine points while Stephanie
Houghton (Manchester, NH) added eight.
Bethany Plasski led four Greyhounds
in double figures with 22 points. Kayla Parker registered 11
points and nine rebounds, while Molly Griffiths and Kelly Meredith
each added 10 points.
Assumption never trailed and built
a 10-2 lead just 3:26 into the game. Southern New Hampshire
cut the lead to four, 14-10, with 11:32 left on a basket by
Smith. The Greyhounds used a 8-2 run to take a 22-12 lead at
the 7:43 mark and took their largest lead of the frame with 23
seconds to play when Griffiths buried a three to make it 35-23,
which would be the halftime score.
The Penmen would whittle the lead
down to seven, 40-33, with just over five minutes gone in the
second half following a basket by Carrington. Assumption
responded with a 12-3 run and a layup by Parker with just over nine
minutes to play gave the hosts a 52-36 lead. The Greyhounds
would maintain a double-digit advantage until SNHU cut the lead to
nine three times in the final 1:26.
Assumption held a commanding 40-23
rebounding advantage, including a 14-5 edge on the offensive glass
that led to a 22-6 margin in second chance points. The Penmen
were just 3-19 from behind the arc, while the Greyhounds converted
18 of their 22 free throw opportunities.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Tuesday night when it travels to American International
College for a 5:30 contest.
