SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
Courtney Coryea totaled 19 of her game-high 26 points in the second
half to lead Le Moyne College to a 54-49 Northeast-10 women's
basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Ted
Grant Court Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins improved to 7-6
and 4-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen saw a five-game win streak
snapped and are now 7-5 and 2-5 in the league. All five of
SNHU's losses have come by seven or fewer points.
Coryea went 10-15 from the floor
for the Dolphins, the only Le Moyne player to finish in double
figures. Vanessa Holden and Latoya Anderson each totaled six
points for Le Moyne. Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, MA) led Southern New Hampshire with 14 points off the
bench, going 6-11 from the floor. Christine Duffy
(South Boston, MA) connected on a pair of three-pointers and
finished with nine points, five assists and three steals, while
Megan
Smith (Smithfield, ME) added eight points.
Julia
Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) grabbed 10 rebounds for
the Penmen.
SNHU trailed 23-16 at halftime, but
held Le Moyne scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second
half as it went on a 16-0 run to take a 32-23 lead with 13 minutes
left on a layup by Carrington. After the two teams traded
baskets, Le Moyne went on a 7-0 run and a layup by Coryea with 9:06
to play cut the Penmen lead to two, 34-32.
The Penmen led 41-35 with just
under seven minutes left on a layup by Houghtaling, but Le Moyne
scored the game's next 12 points and a pair of free throws by
Holden with 3:48 left gave the Dolphins a 47-41 lead. The
guests used a 5-1 spurt to make it 48-46 with 1:39 left on a pair
of free throws by Duffy. Le Moyne would turn it over on a
Denise Scott offensive foul on its next possession, but the Penmen
could not convert on a pair of chances to tie the game.
Coryea scored on the next Dolphin trip, and the hosts sealed the
win by making four free throws in the final 13 seconds.
The first half saw Le Moyne and
Southern New Hampshire trade the lead four times, and the Penmen
held a 15-11 lead with just over eight minutes left before halftime
on a three-pointer by Magdala Johnson
(Sandown, NH) and a basket by Smith. The Penmen would be held
without a field goal for the remainder of the period, and the
Dolphins scored 12 unanswered points to make it 23-15 on an
Anderson basket with 54 seconds to play. A Duffy free throw
nine seconds before intermission accounted for the 23-16 halftime
score.
Le Moyne held its guests to just
31.5% shooting for the game, including a 5-20 (25%) effort in the
first half, while shooting 41.3% from the floor for the game.
The Dolphins, who were outrebounded 35-34, were 14-18 from the free
throw line while the Penmen were 9-13.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday night when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a 5:30
Northeast-10 contest.
