Le Moyne Holds Off Women's Basketball 54-49

BOX SCORE

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Courtney Coryea totaled 19 of her game-high 26 points in the second half to lead Le Moyne College to a 54-49 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Ted Grant Court Saturday afternoon.  The Dolphins improved to 7-6 and 4-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen saw a five-game win streak snapped and are now 7-5 and 2-5 in the league.  All five of SNHU's losses have come by seven or fewer points.

Coryea went 10-15 from the floor for the Dolphins, the only Le Moyne player to finish in double figures.  Vanessa Holden and Latoya Anderson each totaled six points for Le Moyne.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA) led Southern New Hampshire with 14 points off the bench, going 6-11 from the floor.  Christine Duffy (South Boston, MA) connected on a pair of three-pointers and finished with nine points, five assists and three steals, while Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME) added eight points.  Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, NH) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Penmen.

SNHU trailed 23-16 at halftime, but held Le Moyne scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half as it went on a 16-0 run to take a 32-23 lead with 13 minutes left on a layup by Carrington.  After the two teams traded baskets, Le Moyne went on a 7-0 run and a layup by Coryea with 9:06 to play cut the Penmen lead to two, 34-32.

The Penmen led 41-35 with just under seven minutes left on a layup by Houghtaling, but Le Moyne scored the game's next 12 points and a pair of free throws by Holden with 3:48 left gave the Dolphins a 47-41 lead.  The guests used a 5-1 spurt to make it 48-46 with 1:39 left on a pair of free throws by Duffy.  Le Moyne would turn it over on a Denise Scott offensive foul on its next possession, but the Penmen could not convert on a pair of chances to tie the game.  Coryea scored on the next Dolphin trip, and the hosts sealed the win by making four free throws in the final 13 seconds.

The first half saw Le Moyne and Southern New Hampshire trade the lead four times, and the Penmen held a 15-11 lead with just over eight minutes left before halftime on a three-pointer by Magdala Johnson (Sandown, NH) and a basket by Smith.  The Penmen would be held without a field goal for the remainder of the period, and the Dolphins scored 12 unanswered points to make it 23-15 on an Anderson basket with 54 seconds to play.  A Duffy free throw nine seconds before intermission accounted for the 23-16 halftime score.

Le Moyne held its guests to just 31.5% shooting for the game, including a 5-20 (25%) effort in the first half, while shooting 41.3% from the floor for the game.  The Dolphins, who were outrebounded 35-34, were 14-18 from the free throw line while the Penmen were 9-13.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest.

NOTES: Senior Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) connected on two three pointers to move into third place on SNHU's career three-point list with 122.
